Posted January 31, 200916 yr comment_272709 I have new points and a condenser for my 240z and I forgot how to gap the points correctly. I have the feeler gauge tool to gap the points with, but I need some instructions on how to do this correctly. Does anyone know a website that has good instructions on how to do this? Or could someone explain to me how I'm supposed to gap the points correctly? February 1, 200916 yr comment_272714 I'm going to assume that you don't have a service manual. I'd strongly recommend that you get one soon. But in the meantime, you can use the online manual from AutoZone. Not perfect, but it will do what you need as a stopgap.http://www.autozone.com/addVehicleId,1449501/initialAction,repairGuide/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c152800717a1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30676-installing-new-points-condenser/#findComment-272714 Share on other sites
February 1, 200916 yr Author comment_272732 I installed the points today and made the gap .016 inches, but now the car is idling higher. Does the gap affect the idle of the car? Would I have make the gap larger to bring the idle down a tad? February 1, 200916 yr comment_272733 71, It would appear your doing a tune-up, Check your timing and adjust Idle. The new parts are just doing their thing. February 1, 200916 yr Author comment_272734 I turned the idle screw down on each carburetor and the idle didn't seem to go down at all. I had the car idling at 900rpm and now, after the new points were installed, the idle went is up around 1100rpm. February 1, 200916 yr comment_272735 Changing the points changes the timing. You need to readjust the timing. Do you have a timing light? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30676-installing-new-points-condenser/#findComment-272735 Share on other sites
February 3, 200916 yr Author comment_272978 I don't have a timing light. So every time new points are installed the timing has to be adjusted? Is the timing adjusted buy turning the distributor? February 3, 200916 yr comment_273008 I'll look for a Datsun specific later.http://www.xenons30.com/reference.html If the manual isn't for your model the process will be close enough, use the specs for you car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7wcHkHHTEA&feature=relatedTuck\o/ Edited February 3, 200916 yr by Friar-Tuck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30676-installing-new-points-condenser/#findComment-273008 Share on other sites
February 23, 200916 yr comment_275203 Maybe dumb question ... My 70Z has an L28 engine with E12-80 electronic ignition added, does this affect what the timing specs should be? Do I use the timing info for an early L24 engine, or use the timing specs for a later L28 engine? Again, probably stupid question, but what a great place to ask! Don't have the FSM yet for my car, but will be ordering the CD shortly from Nissan! PLEASE DISREGARD - already have answer!!
