Hey thanks for the warm welcome

So a little background story of the car. I got the car Nov 5 as a 21st bday present. The car was owned by a man who's son was a crackhead.. he ran out of cash so he started pulling parts off the car and selling them. The ignition switch connector was snipped off (because he thought he could hot wire it) but he failed. Another thing is that the Transistor ignition unit(TIU) was split in half .. but i got that replaced.

so thats a little bit of history. now to the car.. i replaced the connector since it was missing but it is from a 79 zx. I tried my best and i got it all hooked up. When I turn the key to on acc or start, there is no reaction. The volt meter and clock works , so does the headlights, tail lights etc.

I see in your profile that your car is a 78 280Z. It helps to post that info when you're looking for help. Having a hardcopy of the FSM is nice, and I do have one, but the pdf version is better in that you can look at the pages you need and even print them out if necessary and you don't end up wearing out/ruining your 31 year old manual. Where in California are you located?

Sblake i am from the 626 area its the pasadena area Can someone confirm that the 78z igntion switch only uses 4 wires while the 79zx uses 5? I am wondering because i dont see any sign of a missing wire and also on the 78z wiring schematic there are double "x"s on the ignition switch. thanks!! btw the 77z has 5 as well

The 78 only has four wires on the plug. The reason the 75-77 has five wires is because those years had the fuel pump contacts in the air flow meter and the 5th wire appears to feed that circuit. The 5th wire is used to feed power to the rear wiper on the ZX. Those circuits aren't on a 78.

so sblake, i can use the 79 connector without a problem right?

Just splice together the W/R, the B/Y, the B/W, and the L/R to the corresponding wires in the car and disregard the B/L wire on the connector, but do cap that wire because it would be live when the key in on.
