Tuneup - L28 in 70 240Z

I have a mid-70's engine (N42 block) in my early 70 Z. As I look at keeping it well-tuned, which FSM should I follow to keep it running well? A 280Z FSM would have pollution control stuff that I don't have (smog controls removed). A 240Z FSM would deal with an L24 engine and specs should be different.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Have upgraded with electronic ignition, believe the head is matching. Won't the timing and other areas of adjustment be different if I don't have the same set up as original? Would the timing, idle, plug gap and air/fuel mixture be different? Maybe I am overanalyzing this. :nervous:

Basic settings for tune-up and adjustments will be the same as for the original. The electronic ignition does not change how you adjust the timing, nor the spec. Same for the increased displacement of the L28. The actual adjustment of things like the carbs and such may be different, but the method is not.

Tuning your L-24 , running SUs , or a L-28 with the same Carbs . You use the same specs. What electronic ignition do you have installed? I know Arne had detonation problems with his '71 with a ZX ignition. I ran a ZX on my '73 with no problem. I could run 12* advance with not a ping on either regular or Plus gas. His engine is much fresher than mine was. Pinging or detonation can be caused because of the shape of the combustion chamber and the space if any between the head and the piston. This gap can cause the detonation. Carbon build up and all that also. the advance curve comes into the picture with the later ignition . But as I stated I had no problem with this . I now have a different engine with the same ZX ignition. Go with 10* advance and .035 on the plugs . Use only NGKs. Valves set at .008 and .010'' hot or .010 and .012 cold. ''If it aint broke don't fix it" LOL
