Battery Cover

I picked up this little goodie today. As you can see it has the Nissan part numbers on the bags. Anyone have any ideas as to whether this was original equipment on a 71? My thoiughts are that it might be a JDM part. I haven't seen any talk about a part like this.

Randy,

Those covers are original to the Datsun 240z. They fit neatly under the metal battery hold-down frame which is secured to the firewall and the battery stand. Back before maintenance free batteries, the cover did a nice job of hiding those six screw-on cell caps. Did you pick it up on ebay, or from Nissan? The only differences I have seen on these is the yellow decal which seem to have a couple of variations.

Hopefully you didn't pay the $175 that ebay seller esprist is selling these for now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240Z-260Z-280Z-Battery-top-cover-lid-NOS-Rare_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem380101802886QQitemZ380101802886QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

He has turned into the new reddat, reselling items still available new from the dealer. He started selling coils at about $250, but they are now down to around $190 I think. The coils are still available from the dealer for less than $100 I believe, so I am sure that is where he is getting the battery covers too.

Edit: Looks like Courtesy has the two battery cover parts listed for $14.90 and $6.73 for a total of $21.63(if they are still in stock). A little less than the $175 esprist is trying to sell them for.

I checked with Courtesy Nissan and they said the battery covers are NLA now. Selling them for $175 still seems pricy, but no worse than people reselling the door panels I guess. The coils were still available at least as of a month or two ago.

No I didn't get it from ebay. And I don't think there is any fraud being perpetrated by esprist Chris. I had checked with my local dealer and he also told me that they were NLA. I got a fair deal on it. Remember, its worth what you want to pay for it. I would have liked to spend only $21.63. Its only plastic. I was bidding on an ashtray last week (I dropped mine in the garage), and got out at $165. Crazy prices on some parts, that's for sure. How about $425 for an AM radio?

Thanks for the info Dan. That helps alot. This goes with the splash pan that was not on my car when I got it. Now the hunt continues for original battery cables.

Randy, I agree that a part is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I certainly have paid what others consider to be high prices for things I wanted. However, I do have a problem with sellers claiming that an item is no longer available from the dealer when it actually is. I know Esprist did that with his coils because I bought two of the exact same ones (from Courtesy) as he was selling on ebay a couple of weeks after he started listing them as NLA. Here is one of his more recent ads http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240Z-Ignition-Coil-260Z-NOS-Super-Rare_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a13Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem380097599456QQitemZ380097599456QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

It looks like he at least modified the wording recently to say "This part has been back ordered nationally for last 5 years by Nissan USA and Japan." That still implies it is NLA to me. I thought that was the case with his battery covers too, but maybe not. If someone wants to spend $175 for a battery cover that looks to be a recent production that is their choice.

That's too easy. Make your own battery cables!

I love the NLA brand. I'm looking at one for sale! What-do-you-mean, its NLA?! There it is!!! Hell, the whole car is NLA!!!

Where can I find an original battery? Yuasa brand 50 amp.

Filipe, that vendor is a known scammer.... no other way to phrase it. In simple terms.... NEVER buy anything from him.

If he were to sell a horse, it would probably only have two legs and the other two would be painted on.... and the horse would have had his back broken by plowing rocky tundra... but the horse would be advertised as a thoroughbred Kentucky Derby Triple Crown winner....

Take a look at this thread:

http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=32275

Warn anyone you know, post it on other sites, let your fellow club members know especially those that don't read the posts here.

This guy is the "Nigerian Scammer" of the Z world.

As proof of this, look at this item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240Z-Rare-Carbon-Fiber-OEM-New-Tail-Light-Panels_W0QQitemZ160314279196QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item160314279196&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Note that these are "OEM" yet.... aren't the way they were manufactured originally, which is why he says they're "new".... and if, per the description they're "custom built" how can they be OEM?

A good example of bait and switch in my opinion.... "Yes, she's a virgin.... for the fifth time!!"

Al knows that is neither NLA nor rare-still available from ANY US Dealer just for getting them to order it.

Will

PS,

ANyone who does not check any ebay part for dealer availability should-more often that not the NOS and Rare parts are not...they are simply fraudulently advertised as being that way.

The Club Cd will give you part numbers, what you do with them is up to you...
