Posted February 7, 200916 yr comment_273480 I have a early 1974 260z with all the interlock relays ,seatbelt relay ,emergency switch etc. so if the car sits for a while or for no reason at all I try to start the car all I here is clicking.buonce the new key switch to start several times and all of a sudden the starter kicks in.now when this happens and I hold the key to start position and somebody taps the interlock relay under the hood, which is next to the seatbelt relay, then the starter works.so interlock relay must be bad and is no longer available need to bypass this system . anybody figure out how to bypass the relays and go straight the the starter selonoid thanks kully Edited February 7, 200916 yr by kully 560 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30752-260z-seatbelt-interlock-trouble-need-bypass/ Share on other sites
February 7, 200916 yr comment_273488 I have a late '74 and many years ago I just unplugged the plug-ins located underneath the seats. That eliminated the interlock system from being a factor. I don't really recall doing anything else. February 8, 200916 yr comment_273500 Here's a link to the 260Z FSM. It shows the starter interlock system in the Body Electircal section and has the diagrams and troubleshooting for that system. http://www.xenons30.com/files/FSM/1974%20260z%20FSM.zip Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30752-260z-seatbelt-interlock-trouble-need-bypass/#findComment-273500 Share on other sites

February 8, 200916 yr Author comment_273529 thanks I had to save it then open it . I do have the oem service manual but there is several relays involved like the interlock unit ,interlock relay ,seatbelt relay, and emergency switch, could be anyone of these and they are no longer available so I guess I need to bypass the whole system.that is why I was hopeing somebody might have done this already and can help thanks kully Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30752-260z-seatbelt-interlock-trouble-need-bypass/#findComment-273529 Share on other sites
February 8, 200916 yr comment_273531 This thread talks about the intelock override switch. I would think that if you removed the wires on the emergency switch and jumpered them, the car should start if everything else is okay. Unplug the switch, see which pairs of pins have continuity when the switch is pressed and jumper the corresponding pairs of wires togehter on the plug. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31316 Edited February 8, 200916 yr by sblake01 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30752-260z-seatbelt-interlock-trouble-need-bypass/#findComment-273531 Share on other sites
February 8, 200916 yr Author comment_273556 thanks stephen I was looking at that switchagain. I am going to open the switch up and look inside it. seems when I looked at it yesterday it felt like it is held in electricly. notice they talk about leaving the key in on position then pushing the switch .it felt like when you push the switch with key off it stayed in same position . buy when power is on it stayed in then release back to orignal position .I think it is a momentary switch .I will open it up today and let you know .thanks kully Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30752-260z-seatbelt-interlock-trouble-need-bypass/#findComment-273556 Share on other sites
February 8, 200916 yr comment_273557 My early 260 ,s interlock has been bypassed by previous owners.Looking in the FSM pages BE91,95&103 showing the interlock wiring ,locate the black wire with yellow stripe in the 3 wire plug into interlock relay under the hood, and connect directly to starter solenoid, should start.Make sure you also have good engine to chassis ground. I guess it helps when you actually own a 260Z......
