Correct air cleaner for series one?

I'm looking for the correct air cleaner for my Z (12/70). Does the correct one have the downward snorkel? I'm sure the answer lies somewhere on this site, but I have searched and found no results. Carl, I know that you know. Thanks for your help...

To be correct, I am sure that your 12/70 car had the hot manifold air snorkel with the diverter flap. My 1/71 car, very close to your production date, is one of the very last of the series 1 cars and has the snorkel. I can't quote dates, but the terrific pictures 26th-z profiled are for early '69 & '70 series 1 cars which did not have the heat riser, possibly up to the start of '71 cars in 7/70.

According the www.ztherapy.com, the late '70 smog laws required the addition of the heat riser for carb pre-heat. If you have the original exhaust manifold, you will notice two holes on top of the junction area where the hot air collector cover is attached to the manifold. These threaded holes were not on the early cars that did not have the heat riser.

The ztherapy site may be quite helpful in answering some of your questions.

I tend to agree with Dan. The later Series 1 cars had underhood stickers that certified they met 1971 emissions requirements. As a guess, I'd say that from 8/70 or 9/70 they started using the so-called 'flapper' airbox.

Oh geeze, I guess I didn't notice the 12/70 part of the question. That would make the car a 1971 model year and the preheater throat would be on the air filter housing. I don't have any of those to photograph. And here I was all prepared to get into a discussion about the differences between the early ones!?!! Sorry guys.

adamr, I have a few I can dig out and get pics of, but I've lost track of what they came off of and can't date them. Guess I could use a comparison pic also. I did look in a few manuals but the illustrations only show partial outside views. I don't know how many variations there are of the later flap type air cleaners.

Nice pics of the earlier air cleaners Chris. I was just comparing to the only

non-heatriser, flapless air cleaner I have. It appears to be like the one you show in the middle of the 3 in your pics. Should that be labeled? This one seems unmolested, but has no labels and I can't see any evidence of removal.

I know of three different styles of the 'series one' air filter housing. The earliest did not have tune-up or emission stickers on them.

Chris, you are almost right on this. Other than the decals there are actually 4 different series 1 air cleaners. The three that you mentioned plus the intruduction of the winter/summer flapper as I like to call it. The earliest were on the 1969 non emmission type Japanese Fairlady Z and Canadian Z models. The next were the US 1969 low vin number models with emmissions but lacking the fuel vent tube. The 3rd were on the vins starting in Jan 70 thru July/Aug with the emmissions and fuel vent tube and then finally the winter/summer flapper which went from Aug 70 thru series 2 1972 cars until the 73 flat tops were introduced. We did have however a few exceptions. Cars that were stamped with post 69 production dates but were actually 69 cars had the first or second type air cleaner depending if they were a US or Canadian car. These were the cars that had problems along the assembly line, got pushed aside, and then finished at a later date between Jan and Feb of 70.

Anyway, I guess I'll give the greenhorn z guru a B+ on that answer. LOL, just kidding Chris. I just couldn't resist but its good to keep the head judge up to speed just in case a point is deducted in error at a National convention.

Then My 6/70 no flapper no decal is correct as installed. The decals were never there all the time I have owned this car. Thanks I have had this conversation many times. Some one is always trying to tell me it is not complete with out the decals..

One would think that a change such as adding a Summer/Winter setting on the air cleaner housing - would have an associated TSO or at least be added to the Owners Manual - so that owners knew what it was and how to use it.

I could swear that I had seen instruction in an owner manual somewhere related to that Summer/Winter setting...

The Part Manuals show the Assy-Cover Exhaust Manifold and Duct-Cover to Air Cleaner starting in 05/72.

Was there an Air Cleaner with the Summer/Winter switch - that did not have the duct from the exhaust manifold?

Anyone have any documentation of the addition of the Summer/Winter switch being added to the Air Cleaner Assy?

There was a Revised Edition Service Bulletin Vol 142 issued in Oct 1971 titled "Improvement of Emission Control System (1972 Year Models)". One of the revisions from the previous version of SB Vol 142 issued in June 1971 was the addition of a "Hot-Air Type Air Cleaner". It describes the manual summer/winter switch and the hose from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner. There was also a separate Service Manual "Emission Control System for 1972 Year Models - Revised Edition" issued on Oct 20, 1971 that has similar information. This was also incorporated into the combined version of the 1972 Engine, Chassis and Body Service manual, but not the separate versions of the 1972 Service Manuals.

I don't see anything about the manual air cleaner temperature switch in the 1972 owners manual (at least the 3/72 edition), but the 1973 owners manual (3/73 edition) describes the operation of the Automatic Temperature Control Air Cleaner that was added that year.
