Posted February 26, 200916 yr comment_275515 OK, now as many of you know I just did a motor swap in my 72 240Z. After getting the motor in and everything hooked up I have a small headache :stupid: I am not getting any power on the coil with the key on. Plus nothing on the starter trigger wire with the key in the start pos. I can hear the sol. box click in the pass side footwell but thats as far as it gose. Yes, everything in the fuse box is fine with no wire damage that I can find. Yes everything that should power up with the key on dose. It's just coil power and starter trigger power thats missing. Where should I start ? Also, I would love ta hear this motor run today!!! Where can I jump power to for a temp. deal so I can atleast get it running? I didnt know if I could run a power wire to the resistor before the coil and get it live that way? I plan on fixing whats wrong. But for now I just wana hear it run and make sure everything in ok under the hood before moving into the elec. headaches. Thank you in advance. February 26, 200916 yr comment_275552 There shouldn't be anything wrong in jumping the coil resistor and starter, the starter can be jumped with a screwdriver.I'm sure Dave will jump in on this one with some good knowledge.Chris Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30959-coil-power/#findComment-275552 Share on other sites
February 27, 200916 yr Author comment_275586 The starter is no big deal. I have a remote trigger for that. IMO everyone should have one. I just didnt know if I would hurt anything going hot on the resistor and if I should remove the wire in that spot or not. Thank you. Or for that matter whats the color code for the wires from the key switch from under the dash? Then I can get some testing done. February 27, 200916 yr comment_275633 Search after FSM and there will come a link to the factory service manual.the wire from ignition swich to starter is black/yellow, black/white from switch to ballast resistor, green/white from resistor to tacho/ignition switch.Hope it make sense. You can PM me your mail and i have a PDF with a -73 FSM i can send you.Maybe you should look in to swapping your ignition switch.Chris Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/30959-coil-power/#findComment-275633 Share on other sites
February 27, 200916 yr Author comment_275635 Thank you, yes it makes sense. I hope it's not the ign. switch. Not that it's a big deal to change. I just like having one key for all the locks and ign. I know it's hitting on the starter side because I can hear it clicking when I turn it for start. Thank you on the wire colors. Now I can start looking and trace the wires back. February 27, 200916 yr comment_275636 The electrical switch on the back of the ignition lock can be replaced separately from the key part. No need to have separate keys. Don't sweat that issue. In fact, the electrical switch is relatively affordable - about $25 or so, as I recall. March 12, 200916 yr Author comment_277140 OK, I found the headaches lastnight. Of all the dumb little things that could happen!!!!! I had been going nuts testing wires and doing ohm checks over the last week here. I was showing everything as fine untill I reach the end of the wire on BOLTH the starter trigger and the coil power under the hood. Well, turns out the the rubber case at the end of the wires was keeping me from seeing that the wires had broken just inside that boot. I had never come across this before without the wire pulling from the boot. Now here I had two of them do the same thing. Anyway I replaced the ends on bolth wires and everything is fine. Talk about a waste of time and feeling very dumb once it was found. I almost wanted too cry........
