March 4, 200916 yr comment_276212 They are technically rebuildable (assuming they have never been replaced previously), but I doubt that any replacement parts needed are still available. These days, the closest to stock valving seems to be the KYB GR-2 replacement inserts. I have them in mine, and they work well with stock or near stock springs. Struts are cheep besides. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31028-front-and-rear-struts/#findComment-276240 Share on other sites
November 11, 200915 yr comment_300047 I would like to know if some of you guys have installed a GR-2 shocks all around with lowering springs installed? how is the ride? I am about to buy a set of shocks but I don't know which shocks are good. I found this set of GR-2 for cheap. Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31028-front-and-rear-struts/#findComment-300047 Share on other sites
November 11, 200915 yr comment_300066 I am not sure if my '77 280z's struts are the same, but i also need to replace mine. I have asked in another post but got no response, the shop manual nor the repair manual tell me what special tools are needed. I know there are many people on this site that have done this before. I do not have a garage of shop i am a true back yard mechanic, will i be able to accomplish this task ? There was a section where you have to remove the top sleeve nut this look like you need some special spanner wrench then you have to poor the fluid out off the tube, is this when you rebuild the OEM strut or do you have to do this when you replace the inserts ? November 11, 200915 yr comment_300111 assuming struts on a '71 are basically similar to yours......just replace with a new set of struts.pick up a set of spring compressors. relatively cheap (~30) if this is a one-shot deal. buy the better quality ones if you'll be doing more than once. (hint:buy the better ones, after you see how easy they are, you'll do all your cars yourself;)).i found the compressors with the thinner 'fingers' that grab the coils are a little easier to get on and off.for the gland nut, i used a large pipe wrench to loosen. I didn't worry about chewing it up since the new struts came with their own new gland nuts.and that's about it tool-wise.on the fronts you might want to order the bearings that sit on the top of both assemblies. cheap and as long as you're there anyway, an easy replacement. also make sure to have new bump stops, another while you're at it. Struts are cheep besides. Exactly Gary. Have the kyb g-2's all around on my 72. My springs are progressive and things could not be be better. Just my thoughts Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31028-front-and-rear-struts/#findComment-300133 Share on other sites
