Posted March 20, 200916 yr comment_278262 I seem to be having a problem with my Alternator. Battery died and now not charging. Problem is I don't know what type of Alternator I have. My Z is a 75 280z with a 77-78 engine. So i'm not sure what alternator is in it. Also some wires seem to be cut and spliced together right next to it that make me think it might have an internal voltage regulator. I took a pic. Let me know what you think. Is there anyway to find out what type of alternator it is or should I just get a 75 280z alternator?? March 20, 200916 yr comment_278264 If your voltage regulator is missing and those wires that are spliced, are supposed to go to the VR, then you have an internally regulated alternator.Pull it, take it to your local Auto parts shop and have them test it. If it's bad, have tem do the research and find the exact replacement.Simple.Dave Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31240-alternator-trouble/#findComment-278264 Share on other sites
March 24, 200916 yr Author comment_278658 Turns out it was just a regular externaly regulated alternator. Ordered one from Orielly and it didn't fit!! It was to narrow to fit the bracket. Luckily Pep Boys had one in stock and it fit and worked perfectly. I wish I could have upgraded to a more powerful alternator, but since this is my daily driver I just had to get it fixed ASAP.
