Price of parts

Prices for parts on Ebay are unbelievable. Someone just paid over $300.00 with shipping for a 240 fan shroud (sheet metal). Motorsport auto has fiberglass shrouds for $85.00. Ashtrays for early cars are pushing $200.00! These prices seem a little crazy to me. Recession? What recession?;-)

How about $1,200. or more for a set of gnose headlight covers?

The metal fan shroud price is based on the fact that it is rare and a vital part if you want a completely correct stock 240Z.

If a perfect score at a judged car show or a better selling price is what you're looking for, then a reproduction fiberglass unit is not acceptable.

It's not your money, and no one is getting hurt.....

Gnose, I agree that the metal 240Z shroud is rare, but I'm not convinced that they came stock on US 240Zs. I know that they are shown in the parts catalog, but I think in the US they were actually just available as optional items from dealers. How are these treated at national conventions? Are people deducted points if they are missing?

Good point Mike! What if a car has non US spec genuine optional parts like: Fog lights, rear wing, spoiler, headlight covers, rally clock, foot rest、throttle handle for Series1? Do they deduct points for them at ZCCA ?

People tend to forget what you like to do for your own car when it comes to car show.

I just bought some nos parts yesterday.I told my wife I was planning on buying about 150 to 175 dollars and asked if she had that much cash on her.She didn't so she gave me a check in case I saw something else I just had to have.In 1 hour I spent just over 1700.00 dollars and didn't buy but a fraction of what I wanted.Since my car will never be in concource condition,I couldn't justify spending 10,000 in parts that I already have that can be refurbished for a fraction of that. For some one doing a full restoration275 dollars for 2 true old style radiator hoses might be a good deal but it was a little much for me. According to the ZCCA judging rules, a stock car is defined by how the car came out of the factory and not the dealership (or how you want the car to look re: fog lights, etc.).

A FG shroud would not have any points deducted if it was clean and installed correctly. If there was a tie between two cars, then the one with the metal shroud would win based on originality.

The same holds true for braided hoses, tires, batteries, etc. Original parts trump new parts as long as they are clean.

Rules not to your liking, then join the rules/judging committee and work to change them, otherwise "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" and move along.

How long did Carl Beck search for the correct rallye lights for his BRE car?

Ask him if he over paid for them....

Their worth is proportional to your desire to have them.

gnosez,

So are you saying that all US 240Zs had a metal fan shroud from the factory? Are they deducted points at a ZCCA judged show if they don't have the shroud? I don't recall seeing them in pictures of cars at national conventions. How about splash pans? How are they treated?

Series I 240s had the metal ones and the metal fans.

Splash pans are judged if they are there. In a tie, a car w/pan is better than one w/o.

Please remember that judging of stock Zs is very different that all other classes.

Don't get confused by car show rules and practicality.

Hi gnosez:

No - the North American Spec 240Z's 70-72 did not have the metal fan shrouds as standard equipment.

I'd have to go back and check - but I do not believe that the 73's had them as standard equipment either. I know they didn't for the first six months of production, because adding the fan shrouds was part of the "fix" for the problems with the emissions carb.'s in 73. Just as retro-fitting electric fuel pumps was. It might be possible that the 73's produced in the second half the year started coming through with them as standard, but I don't think so...

FWIW,

Carl B.

Furthermore, if you have a non "as shipped from the factory" part, it will cost you points. Same goes for "options"...at the moment. Series One Zs did not have fan shrouds or splash pans. In addition, tire originality is specifically mentioned in the current rules, meaning if you don't have original tires, you get dinged. No offense, John, but the problem with the rules is that several different people are making several different interpretations. Here is exactly what they say at the moment.

Vehicles exhibited must be configured exactly as shipped from factory (NOT DEALER). Cars with Dealer add-ons such, as wheels, other than stock tires, side moldings, etc. can enter this class with deductions for same. Radios, paint color, tires, etc. must be as shipped. A/C must be factory installed except 240Z which may have same A/C as installed by dealer, i.e. ARA or Frigid King, with basic York compressor. Daily Drivers can enter this class if desired. (This section will be reviewed at a future date.)

That "future date" will hopefully be on the agenda in San Antonio.

Getting back to the post that started this thread......

Parts are expensive only if you think they are.

As my wife the psychologist taught me long ago, we each live in our own reality.

Remembering that has saved me a great deal of anguish when dealing with others. :0)

Lots of interesting comments. I guess I was just surprised by the cost of parts and lack of available reproductions for a Z versus the MGB that I have restored. Motorsport Auto is going to have a front center bumper available for the early cars, cost: $999.99. Anybody have any pictures of an early Z with nerf bars??
