Z Kid Posted September 26, 2002 Share #1 Posted September 26, 2002 Just got myself a set of new floor pans for the 240Z, and i'm wondering if there are any tricks in welding them in and getting a nice job?
2ManyZs Posted September 26, 2002 Share #2 Posted September 26, 2002 Take your time. Patience is the key word! Remember the old carpenter's saying, "Measure twice, cut once."
Ken Posted September 27, 2002 Share #3 Posted September 27, 2002 :beard: Sounds like Welding 101 or someone who has had recent experience......
phi22b@ck Posted September 27, 2002 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2002 Buy and use a grinder. My floor pan patches do not look so good -- the 23 gauge wire with voltage set on the lowest setting was burning through. I ended up with lots of spots instead of a nice bead. The grinder made it look a little better, but not perfect. Take your time.
2ManyZs Posted September 27, 2002 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2002 It is also a good idea to practice welding some scrap sheet metal to get your welder settings correct before you start welding on the car. Welding any thin sheet metal takes a fairly steady hand and lots of practice. When you are cutting out the old floor pans, don't cut out the old floors to the correct size of the new ones, leave a little extra to allow for final fitting and trimming. If you are using a Mig, use a gas set-up, not the flux core wire, it will be much, much easier to weld, and a leave a lot cleaner and stronger welds.
