I know this really should be really simple... I have ordered the twin K&N air cleaners with air horns from msa and id like to clean up the intake manifold and such before they get here. When i go to remove the cover for the stock air filter, the two wingnut screws come loose, but then the cover just bumps into the left strut tower before it clears the air horn type things coming from the base plate of the air box, and those get in the way of me just lifting the cover and filter off. :stupid:

Is there something i have missed or special technique to getting this thing off?

Im sure the answer is right in front of me, but im just too blind to see it.

One thing to check is that the air filter clears the air horns. Mine has a K&N filter and it just clears the air horns.

As I recall it requires a little effort. It's been a while and would likely come naturally to me if I were at the car but I think you have to separate the housing in such a way that you can first remove the air filter itself. Once the filter element is out the cover can clear the horns and strut tower.

Mine just slip off, but there is however not much room, what car do you have, a good advise is to put it in your signature.

That's a good idea, ill do that now. Its a 1972 240z and as of yet, still completely stock.

I seem to remember having to spin it so that the snorkel is more or less pointing up. It definitely takes some 'finnageling'

You have to pull the back edge away first and then spin it down so that the snorkel is pointed up a little. It is even more fun with a strut bar across the top of the engine.

Oh, and when you put it back on be sure that the wing nut screws are in the cover before you put it in place because the front one will NOT go in afterward, it is too long.

well, after fiddling with it a couple more times i still couldnt get it off. I found that the PCV tube had a metal tube inside the case and it was getting stuck on the filter and was preventing me from spinning the cover at all. so after getting frustrated enough i took a hack saw the the little metal tube (im not going to be using anymore) and then i was able to get it off with a little more wrestling. Not the ideal way im sure, but it worked

Just allow the rear of the air cleaner to lower and then with it pointing upward, just slide it toward the front of the engine and it will slip right out . Save the air cleaner in case you become tired of smelling fumes and want to reinstall it later. Gary
