Posted April 9, 200915 yr comment_280273 Hello,I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about selecting spark plug wires? Does it really matter what kind of wire you get for your car? Do you need a certain set up with a Mallory Unilite Distributor and a MSD Blaster 2 coil, and MSD 6A? April 9, 200915 yr comment_280307 Your best bet would be NGK Blue spark plug wires. I have the Unilite, MSD 6AL, Promaster coil and NGK plugs. The NGK wires seem to be the best I've used thus far.Dave Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31460-spark-plug-wires/#findComment-280307 Share on other sites
April 9, 200915 yr comment_280311 I also use NGK wires and they seem just fine. Other good brands for L-series are Taylor and Magnecore. But the NGKs are fine and far more affordable. I was looking at the Taylor wires, but I'm not sure If I need the 8mm or http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PEIC08/12-4169? April 11, 200915 yr comment_280436 Taylors were good for many years and I liked them, but once I found Magnecor KV85 Competition 8.5 Ignition Cables.... I'll never use anything else on any of my cars.http://www.magnecor.com/magnecor1/kv85r100.htm. What made you use these above all others? I also noticed that they will now custom make wires to your specs for free, I may have them cut them to length to run in front of the engine instead of over the top. I always liked the look better but didn't want to try to put the ends on a set of high performance wires myself. Did you use this service or just order the set that they have specified? April 12, 200915 yr comment_280504 Couple years ago I was chasing an ignition/fuel bug on the dyno. After upgrading and replacing just about every ignition component, MSD box, Plugs, Wires, Coil, Pertronix, wiring and grounding it turned out to be fuel pressure issue. But after installing the KV85 wires I felt the car sounded, felt and ran a touch better on the dyno. The wires seemed little stronger, but they are little bigger. The boots perhaps are little better made, and can take extreme heat. I'm like you and don't want to make the ends up. Use to always make them up but the factory can do a better job than I could, getting lazy too. I like the idea of the standard fit keeping the wires at a shorter length, less wire to go bad. When you lay them side by side, they feel like they hook up tighter and seal better. I kept my Taylors as a back up for the track. I remove plug wires and install new plugs everytime I take the car to the track and we read the plugs right off the track couple times mid day so the wires really get worked. This is where the Taylors showed the wear faster than the Magnecor wires. Actually the Magnecors still feel like new. Just bought set for my Formula Firebird couple weeks ago so the Taylors are coming off that car next weekend. Their sales pitch sold me too. Edited April 12, 200915 yr by Chino 240Z Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31460-spark-plug-wires/#findComment-280504 Share on other sites
April 12, 200915 yr comment_280568 Chino,Thanks for the info, I'm definitely going to give them a shot. I'm in the process of installing the MSD-6AL and Blaster 2 Coil and wanted to go ahead and get the best wires while I'm at it. Like you, I'll keep the Taylor set as a backup. BTW that is a fantastic looking engine compartment, I'm not to that level yet but the work continues...
