June 18, 200915 yr comment_287086 No idea, i'm living in the old world Maybe someone from the east coast can give a recommendation? It's a good opportunity to also get the advance mechanism overhauled! June 22, 200915 yr Author comment_287536 Hmm.. I am starting to think that it might be a problem with my tach and the tuning of the carbs.. I think 2 fast 2 Z is on the right track. I lowered the plug gap from .032 to .030 and it seems to be running better now for some reason (I went higher too, it got worse). I can hear the engine revving more even though the tach stops. I am trying to find someone or a place to tune my carbs and the hunt isn't going so well. I haven't even been able to find a uni-syn locally, maybe I can check at a motorcycle shop? June 22, 200915 yr comment_287544 You can come a long way by using a piece of ½ inch garden hose, just listen to the intake sound.Chris Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31911-pertronix-wont-rev-past-4-45k/?&page=6#findComment-287544 Share on other sites
July 26, 200915 yr Author comment_290450 Hey everyone, I have been messing with the car some more and the problem still persists. I Took the car to a shop and had them tune the carbs. The car feels much stronger and has better throttle response, but that didn't fix the problem. I am beginning to think that the problem is in the distributor, as the problem changes based on where I place the timing. When I advance the timing a good bit, the car will rev fairly high but it starts to make a sound that I believe is detonation (sort of sounds like a spitting noise). Maybe the internal advance mechanism isn't working correctly which makes me need to advance it more? What do you guys think? I have been trying to find a local person with and extra dizzy to try, but that hunt isn't going to well. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Elliot Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/31911-pertronix-wont-rev-past-4-45k/?&page=6#findComment-290450 Share on other sites
July 27, 200915 yr comment_290504 I wouldnt assume that the advance mechanism is the (only) problem, as soon as you high rev enough the advance is locked out at the maximum anyway.Your symptoms do point to timing irregularities due to worn axle bearings, so a distributor rebuild is recommended at this point. If timing is not advanced enough, the engine will run rough and the exhaust smells of gas. Take care with too much advance, detonation can damage your pistons, rings and head bearing. July 27, 200915 yr Author comment_290506 Well what does the detonation sound like? The noise that I am hearing doesn't sound like anything I have read. It has more of a spitting type of sound then a pinging sound. I am looking to see if anyone has an extra dizzy to try, or I might just get a reman one. Carbs backfiring is usually wrong ignition timing/and or mixture too lean. September 23, 200915 yr comment_295505 I used to have this problem for about 5 months , won't rev past 4K then it will backfire through the carbs :stupid:, I just removed the whole dizzy (with the pertronix and the coil) this morning and replaced it with E12-80 dizzy and coil, and the car started right away , it sounds good and nice but i did not rev up to 4k to check the backfire thing, I'll check it this afternoon!
