My name is Gary. I have a 1973 240Z I just took out of storage and brought to Florida. It runs well, has 48,000 miles on it. I had it serviced including drain the gas tank and put fresh, clean the plugs, flush the radiator and bleed the clutch. My problem is there is a strong smell of raw gasoline in the cabin. Nothing is dripping or leaking and there is no smell of gasoline outside the cabin. There is no gas smell in the carpets from shoes. The service tech said, if the gas cap is not on correctly the cabin will smell, but the cap is on correctly. Anyone have any ideas? Help……

probably the evaporator tank. if you do a search on it theres write ups on removing it

just go to http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2 and search "vapor tank" or "gas smell" there is no one thread on this subject but multiple threads it because it can be one of many issues by searching using those key words you my find the thread that has your fix,

but you should start by inspecting all your hoses. try hunting down a 73 240z FSM

One of the most common questions about Z's. You could fill volumes with the amount of info about fixing the gas fumes issue. On this board and others. Fixes range from lengthening your tailpipe, to sealing your hatch, to adjusting your floats. Try a couple of search terms and you'll find all kinds of possible solutions.

Just go to the top of the page and in the header you will find Search. Click on it and follow the pomps. Look under evap tank, or gas fumes .

the evaporation tank is on the passenger side behind the trim panel to the rear of the tire. There are several hoses that connect to it and the gas tank and fill hose. Most likely one or more of these are cracked and leaking fumes. I showed a member named dogma how to do away with the thing a few years ago and he wrote an article on it. If you decide to remove and do away with the tank and cannot find the info . send me a PM (private message) and I will help you.

I did a search for "gas fumes" and it gave me the link I originally posted. I guess the search results don't stay active for very long, but if you do a similar search you will find lots of information about this. Like others have said, it may be a cracked hose or air gaps that you need to seal up.

This thread got me to use the search feature to find out why when I fill my 73 I get a leak....but only when the tank is full after I burn off a gallon or two it no longer leaks. I could not find any former talks of that using the search....it also leads to fumes in the car too of course. I seems to be leaking from the top of the tank and not any of the sides. Opinions? or shoud I search with the search feature more? Or did I just high jack?
