Running on a near empty tank

I can't remember if I read about this or saw it on this site but I seem to remember that it will affect the performance of the car. Can anyone enlighten me on the downside, if any, on operating on low fuel reserve. I am specifically talking about an FI vehicle.

You're probably sucking up all the rust & (junk) that's in your tank - not good for any engine. this comes from the old cars with steel gas tanks, ahich you kept at least 1/4 full so the foreign matter stayed in the tank and didn't get in the supply line. Fortunately, newer cars have plastic gas tanks (or at least mine does) so there's no chance for rust, but you can't always guarantee perfectly clean gas tank.

I think that you may be sucking some air, which isn't good either.
