MaximumHP Posted May 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 28, 2009 I'm planning to pull out my L24 soon here, but the lifting lugs to pull the motor have been removed from my car. Is there another place I can attach the chains to pull the motor from? My load leveler has 4 brackets that I could possibly use the valve cover bolts, but I guess I'd rather not have the load on bolt threads.Thanks for any help,Eric Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
five&dime Posted May 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 28, 2009 Do not use the valve cover bolts!!!!There should be a hook on the front for this very reason. It may be missing though. You could leave the manifold attached and use that for the rear. Try and find a large threaded hole and a bolt on the front side of the block. For my 510, I borrowed a factory L series bracket that came on the front of his motor for this. For the rear, I threaded an exhaust manifold bolt in and used that put a chain on that. Carl Beck Posted May 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 28, 2009 You use the same bolts/studs that used to hold the Factory lifting lugs - just bolt the chain there, using large washers on top of the chain link. Bolt the two front and two rear chains on your Load Leveler together if you have too. So you will have one connection at the Left front of the engine and one at the right rear. Ttiger Posted May 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 28, 2009 Use one lift point where the fuel pump bolts to the head and the other on the last bolt (by the firewall) where the exhaust manifold bolts to the head. Carl Beck Posted May 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 28, 2009 Yes. The shear strength of the bolt/stud are far above weight of the engine/tranny. Just be sure you have about a half inch threaded into the block.I usually remove the original bolt/stud and use one about a half inch or more longer - just so I have room for the chain link and washers.FWIW Carl B. texasz Posted May 28, 2009 Share #8 Posted May 28, 2009 Just one more idea, I had a parts car where the head was already removed and I needed to pull the lower end and tranny. I took either a chain or strap (like a tow strap or something), I can not remember which, and ran it down one side of the block through the center of the motor mount under the engine through the center of the other motor mount and up the other side of the engine and connected both ends to the hoist. =Enigma= Posted May 30, 2009 Share #9 Posted May 30, 2009 I once pulled a motor & tranny in one piece from a 280ZX in the junkyard using a doubled up seatbelt. I tied the seatbelt to the rear of the intake manifold and the other end to the alternator bracket. Worked like a charm. If I had a chain at the time, I would have bolted it to the block where the lifting brackets mount up. Sometimes you just have to improvise.
