Ignition Relay Kit - Has Anyone Tried this?

Occasionally on really hot days my 240z sometimes doesn't turn over. I hear the "Clicking" noise but no soleniod/starter action. It's ussually after I've run the car a while around town so it's hot and the heat is close to 90F outside. My electric fans work fine, all lights work, the radio works and I'm upgraded with the 60amp alternator hookup so my battery stays charged nicely. I've checked all my grounds and cables and could not find anything. I've seen other threads here with others that experience this problem.

Question: Has anyone installed this Starter Relay Kit; was it easy and did it make your staring more reliable in the Heat of Summer?

I made a relay kit for my 87 toyota truck using a later model starter relay and it made a tremendous difference in starting it.

The ignition switch on the truck was run directly to the solenoid from the factory and couldn't carry enough current to do the job after 200k miles. If I remember right our zcar set-up is similar, I am sure it couldn't hurt.

I have no experience with the relay kit, but I have experienced the same symptoms on my '72 240Z. They persisted until I finally changed out the old battery cables for new ones. Seems that despite the fact they 'looked' good, they were not. Many electrical gremlins disappeared when I put in the new cables. (This was, of course, after all connections had been cleaned up several times.) de

Yes, power to relay, switch to relay, and relay to starter...I dont remember the posts exactly, but it was easy and much better than running a starter button (previous owners solution).

Dave (aka: Zs-ondabrain) may have some valuable input on this as he has done extensive work with the lighting for our Z cars (i.e. relay setups for the headlights etc). Dave, any thoughts/input?

try to find the relay that is clicking mine was the interlock relay in my 1974 260z . the relay would not pull in all the way . if you find the one that clicks hold the key to start position and have someone tap the relay and see if it starts if it does replace the relay or like mine nla so I by passed it .kurt

my 1974 260z had a clicking relay the would do the same thing . found the relay by cycling the key and had someone feel for the relay that was clicking.then held the key to start position and had someone tap the relay a few times and it started . so bad relay replace or bypass like I did kurt

Fused power to pin 30 (14 or 12 guage is great) (15 amp fuse should be fine)

ground wire to pin 85

starter wire to pin 86

wire from pin 87 to starter solenoid (14 or 12 guage wire)

easy enough, great power to solenoid, easier on the ignition switch and also allows you to use a low amperage push button switch if you wanna do that kinda thing to your Z.......

Well I installed this 12v Starter Relay kit. It was pretty easy to do in about 20mins. The challenge for me was getting the wire lengths to my liking such that it integrated nicely into my harness. The Relay and 15amp Fuse fit nicely in my Battery area out of the way.

Tried it today in +85F heat - while running some errands for the 4th of July cookout and it worked superbly! Immediate starting when I turn the key to Start! It's a reall treat and no more worry when I go to a gas station to fill up on a really hot day.

Highly recommended for anyone with a bit of a flakey starting problem in high temperature conditions.
