another linkage issue.

Recommended Posts

Got a set of rebuilt carbs from paltech. Linkage is fine when car is off very linear. With car on it has the common stick right away making it impossible to just take off easy. Almost like vacuum is holding them shut while on.

Same source, same problem---won't release to an idle without a foot tap to the accelerator pedal.

The set I got from Bruce at ZTherapy doesn't have this issue.

Overall I am pleased with Jeff's work with this exception--just haven't gotten around to sending them back for adjustment. I think it is in the throttle shafts, but just a WAG on my part.

I feel certain he will make it right.

Good guy!

Not sure that Paltech is the problem, as my original, non-rebuilt carbs have the "foot-tap-to-get-normal-idle" issue also. Typically sits about 200 RPM fast until I tap the throttle, that drops it to the normal 6-700 RPM. Haven't found a fix yet.

has nothing to do with the functionality of the carbs thats whats weird. Its linear when off. I can make it do what i want when it's off all the time. Its only when running. its getting better as they break in. I have read all the old threads tried all the tricks. But it is really like the vacuum is causing a issue sucking the blades tight.

Like i said when its off i can barely touch it and get it to act normal.

all linkage is new from pedal to carb all greased the right way all adjusted the right way it really strange. my motor does pull 20hg at idle. 185 across the board for compression pulls like a mutha all the way till 6. Sometimes i wonder if the tach is right it pulls so hard but it is i compared it with a high end tach meter from snap-on.

I cant say enough good things about jeff. He offers a great service just like zthearpy. Competition is good for everyone as well.

On my previous Z, I was able to get rid of it by doing the following:

1) Eliminate friction.

- Used a moto-tool with polishing pad and abrasive polish to make the linkage "balls", "sockets" and shaft where the go theough the bearings to almost mirror-smooth. Get rid of the part-line inside the ball if it is evident.

- lubricated all contact areas with silicone grease.

- make certain firewall bellows has a slight "pre-load" towards idle.

- verify throttle springs are clean and lubricate with spray, dry lubricant. (the stuff used on bike chains).

- verify throttle shaft areas are clean and lubricate with spray, dry lubricant.

2) Check vacuum damper diaphram operation. Is it smooth and free? Also, there should be a small amount of play.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this is an old thread but I was quite surprised to find it after having spent the last two weeks with the same issue on a set of recently installed paltech carbs. My throttle return issue was on the rear carb and was quite severe, sometimes getting stuck so high I had to shut it down.  The linkage moved freely when the car was not running but was stiff as hell when running making it difficult to accelerate smoothly. I dismantled the linkage right back to the peddle and lubed etc to no avail. I finally pulled the carbs  and put my old ones back on (everything in the setup except the carbs and centre linkage is the same). The old ones  run beautifully especially now my linkage is so smooth.

Looking at the Paltech carbs off the car I found metal shavings on the front throttle shaft. I am going to dismantle and see what I find on the rear throttle shaft. I actually hope it is just metal shavings as that is an easy fix. I will report my findings.

Jeff Payla at paltech has been MIA with no reply to any of my messages. Hopefully, everything is ok with him and he eventually gets back to me.
