ea6driver Posted June 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2009 Reading straight from my 78 FSM:"To drain the cooling system remove radiator cap, release drain **** at the bottom of radiator and drain plug on side of cylinder block."Could someone please tell me exactly where this drain plug on the side of the cylinder block is? Left side/right side? Forward/rear end of the block? What does the drain plug look like? etc. Thanks for your help.
Mike B Posted June 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2009 (edited) Left rear. It is a 14mm bolt in the block. Edited June 4, 2009 by Mike B
sblake01 Posted June 4, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 4, 2009 14mm? As I recall, it takes a 22mm socket to remove it
Mike B Posted June 4, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 4, 2009 14mm? As I recall, it takes a 22mm socket to remove itI thought I remembered them being larger than that too, which is why I typed "large bolt" initially. But then I went out to check the car and spare engine in my garage and both are 14mm (they are from 1969 production cars). I just went and checked the bolt in my 5/72 and it is 22mm, so maybe the 14mm is just another thing unique to the early cars.-Mike
ea6driver Posted June 5, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted June 5, 2009 Thanks.I found it. Buried under the aft part of the intake manifold and close by the exhuast downpipe. Sure would have been easier to get to if it were on the other side.22mm on my 78. Now to try and unscrew it tomorrow after going out to buy a 22mm socket.
