June 20, 200915 yr comment_287325 All things being equal - and they're not - I'd probably keep looking. It was in Florida humidity for years and is now in Wisconsin, land of salted roads, where cars go to return to nature. Other than spending the last 38 years on Okinawa, there are probably not more hostile rust causing environments for a Z than where it's been. The license plates look like they expired in 2006, so I wonder how roadworthy. As others have said, it all depends on how big a project you want to take on and how big your budget is. Anything can be rebuilt, as I know from owning my '71 since new.Dennis Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/32273-need-your-thought-on-this-car/?&page=2#findComment-287325 Share on other sites

Other than spending the last 38 years on Okinawa, there are probably not more hostile rust causing environments for a Z than where it's been. Having lived in Florida for the past 36 years, with my 72 Z, I do not find Florida to be at all "rust causing". The second 72 I purchased from its original owner here in St. Petersburg, Florida and found it to be all but rust free as well.I did have to replace the dog legs on the second 72 - but I've seem them go bad on just as many West Coast Z's.Granted that most of the Great Lakes States, and the rest of the rust belt States are called that for a reason. There is however no comparison between cars from the North and Florida cars.FWIW,Carl B. June 20, 200915 yr comment_287363 I also live in FL, and can say it depends on how far inland you live. If you are no closer than maybe 5 miles to the ocean, its probably ok. You just want to be away from the salt air. The salt air eats anything metal, and destroys some plastics. I live a half block inland, and have to frequently rinse everything with fresh water, even stuff that never leaves my garage. If it is steel, I have to keep it painted, and make sure its rinsed off a lot. Even if its properly coated, if you don't rinse it, it will corrode. Even unrinsed stainlesss steel will discolor with corrosion. If you rinse it, and its coated/painted, it'll be ok. Having a Z here will be a challenge.... June 20, 200915 yr comment_287371 Patience is a virtue that will benefit you the most. In the Chicago area you will not find a relatively rust free, dependable driver for 4k. There will be a substantial amount of underlying rust repair to be done on this car as evidenced by your pics. I would suggest waiting and saving the money you would have spent purchasing and making roadworthy on this car, for a better opportunity to come along. Dozens come up for sale every week and there are deals to be found. There are lots of us guys hacking away at our rusted Zs saying....why didn't I wait for a better one to come along? I'll think I'll print your quote, laminate it, and carry it in my wallet as an antidote for my occasional instances of "Car Fever".
