I just found out a good use for the 'friends' function on this kind of web forum software:

You can install a chat feature to do instant messaging while another user is online. You can only chat with your friends, of course, after asking permission, (if required.)

Whether it happens or not is another thing.

In the past, I would have inserted a snide comment here but I'll resist. I guess I'm mellowing with age. Anyway, chat just doesn't do it for me. I guess it's a younger generation type thing?

Since there's no formal Chat system installed here any more, the feature referred to earlier could be useful, since it's already limited to the people you've already 'approved' as a friend. How often are you and your CZCC 'friends' here at the same time? If you're not inclined to do any chatting you just tell the other person you're not interested.
