Quick Brake Drum Question

Do brand new brake drums need to be turned before I install them? They both seem fine; I tried searching around but couldn't find an answer.

Depends on who you ask. If they aren't rusty from shipping moisture, I'd probably clean the friction surfaces thoroughly and use them as is. But many brake shops will turn them first.

Thanks for the quick response, what would you recommend to clean them with? Would brake cleaner work or should I just wipe the friction surface down with water and dry them? There isn't any rust or defects.

Brake cleaner is good. You want to remove any oils or rust preventatives used prior to shipping.

Perhaps shops where the tech writer is paid on commission? If you turn drums and rotors every time you do any brake work you can sell a lot more drums and rotors!

Not just the commission shops. The brake pad/shoe manufacturers recommend that all drums and rotors have at least a skim cut done prior to new friction material to ensure a good, clean surface. Promotes better break-in and less noise complaints.
