Well wait a minute - he is running an online shipping business ! EVERYTHING, including packaging, stamps, phones, time etc. costs money. If you know up front what the costs are and his terms are , why are you typing 'gouge' to describe his practices ? Can't you read ???? Seriously , wake up (everybody) and smell the java ! I get called at all hours of the night for emergency lock service and I get the incredulous " A HUNDRED AND FIFTY BUCKS FOR JUST 1 MINUTE OF LABOUR ????? " all the time. This is after a NEGOTIATED deal with nobody twisting anybody's arms , at 2 AM to boot !

I don't see anything I have said as bad mouthing. I am going bald-to some that is a horribly mean thing to say, to me it is simply the truth.

Getting you up in the middle of the night to get dressed, find your keys, verify your tools, and head out at a moments notice is not Nearly the same thing as getting together 10 small items ready to ship out per day that you set up to sell a week to ten days before, and can do from the comfort of your own home, in your PJs-or less-.

I would expect to pay a premium for emergency service. I don't think anyone(else) would ever expect to pay a premium price for a standard shipping service.

Well put. Being up front with shipping services and costs is standard operating procedure for most sellers on eBay. Those of us with experience will ask for details if they are not listed. Those with less experience likely will not ask and become prey for the seller who conceals the details. I learned the hard way many years ago to ask if it's not listed. I've listed and sold thousands of items on ebay and wouldn't do so without those details. Every seller template that I have seen requests shipping details, so if they are left out, it is by intention or laziness.

I think the issue here is that reddat's shipping charges are not typically disclosed in advance, and unless a buyer is aware enough to ask, they get the surprise after they have already purchased the item.

Unkle, your point is very well taken, if the seller of an item or service discloses the cost in advance (no matter how reasonable or unreasonable), and the buyer accepts the bid and then questions the bill after the fact... bad buyer...

Conversely, a seller expecting undisclosed, and seemingly unreasonable charges after the sale/service is completed.... Bad seller.

Reddat tends not to disclose his (perceived high) shipping fees most of the time until the sale is completed and most people don't see this as a fair practice. If there is an argument that it is fair, I'd be interested in learning.

You should do some reading yourself. (No flame intended.)

He RARELY posts the shipping charges he will charge.

Pull a search on e-Bay Sellers and find Reddat.

Look at his stated Shipping. Out of close to 100 items (the first page of 14, +/-1350 total items) only 7 had stated shipping. I'll leave it to somebody else to find the total of those that actually stated the charges.

You are hit with the charges AFTER you've won the auction... only to find that they are more than anyone could expect and AFTER you cannot backout of the auction, i.e. you're the winner, you HAVE to pay his ransom or he gives you bad-feedback and reports you as a non-payer. The feedback system has changed, but I'll bet that few people are aware of the way changes are now instituted.

ADDITIONALLY, after he charges you $10-15 dollars (US), or substantially more, to ship an item to you... you receive it in a manila envelope barely wrapped or protected.... with $0.42 postage on the envelope. Clearly the "handling" portion of the shipping is just a wee bit expensive.

This is DECEPTIVE, as the bid/auction price should bear his "markup" for the item and not the shipping charges. His markup on the item IS the "handling" IN the shipping charges.

In essence, he's asking for a "blank check" auction bid which you hope he won't over-charge.... only to find out that he DOES overcharge. You have little to no recourse. E-Bay has never been too helpful in resolving this issue, and apparently not too willing to step in and do something about it. People need to be informed.

So, where do you expect people to find out about it?

The only way he'll change his ways is by people not buying from him, and letting him know WHY. The only way to inform people about his practices... on the internet... is to post that information.... on the internet, which is where posts such as this are made.

We can't bloody well stand outside his store and protest, can we?

When you get called out at 2am, you let people know how much you'll charge.... BEFORE you even get out of bed. IF they accept, you then get dressed and head on out. If they don't, you go back to sleep. That's proper and acceptable.

You're doing it properly, you don't wait to get there and THEN tell them that it's going to be $150, otherwise they'd have the right to complain.

I have over 200 purchases off of ebay. Number one rule is : email seller first for shipping cost simply because I'm in Canada , and I know it's going to be more . The only time I feel screwed is when I get a FEDEX or UPS demand for sometimes over 100 percent of the actual purchace value . These nice invoices come over 3 weeks later , and THAT'S a scam . Instead of waiting in line at a regular USPS location like they SAY they would , they get lazy and phone for a pickup , smoking me on the cost. It's happened way more than once. True I don't always know the truthful reason for the change in delivery, I always end up eating the cost. Why would you stupidly buy anything over the internet before firming up the shipping costs ? YOU are the one simply letting THEM write the ''blank cheque '' , no ? This guy Reddat has never gone against his quoted shipping the crap I buy from him . If he did, shame on ME if I order from him again. Just my educated 2 cents , take it and throw it as far as you can if you want, it's your money ! If he won't answer your questions regarding shipping charges before the auction, why are you buying from him ? Just tell me why, it doesn't make sense !

And like EScanlon said, we are talking about it so people know the game he's playing. Hopefully, people stop buying from any deceptive sellers on eBay, but if the word doesn't get out, how will people know who to avoid?

The joke is the ''self regulation '' regarding Ebay . You are the bag of money , and Ebay is the tool used remove said bag from you , in any way possible.

Knowing this , it's like buying clothes without checking the size first. So again, why buy from him without FIRST checking the shipping costs ? Some will outright cheat , and not send you anything . They eventually get caught in Ebay's spotlight , but most sellers and buyers are fair , and knowing the terms up front is the key to making it all work. Our Government here is now auditing Ebay sellers that claim to do over a certain amount each month. There's gotta be money in it if Big Brother comes a sniffin ! :pirate:
