Shock absorbers.

I'm just wondering what brand of shock absorbers are the most favoured by the members.

I'm considering fitting new shockies to "Precious" as she's still fitted with resurected originals and I'd like to know if there are any that will fit straight in.

Searching didn't help me very much.

If Precious has mostly stock suspension, KYB GR-2 should be about as close to stock as you'll find. Although, since they are gas-charged, they may raise the car's ride height a bit - I'd expect about 10-15mm. But since the only non-gas units I've found these days are Konis (which are reputed to be harsher ride, even when set full soft), the KYBs are probably the best choice.

I am running them in my '71, with cut-down repro Euro Stage 1 springs. The ride is firm, but not harsh. Much like stock, I suspect.

There are several options;

OEM (hydraulic filled):

Normal Resistance

Firm Resistance

Aftermarket (gas filled):

Tokico

Koni

KYB

Sachs

Monroe

Most people buy Tokico or KYB and move on. If you are interested in low cost, then Sachs or Monroe is a good alternative. If you want OEM, then you can be my situation and wait 3-4 months for a boat to arrive from Japan with OEM parts.

If I were doing up a nice street machine with reasonably stiff springs, but not a full on racer, I'd go with the Bilsteins or maybe the Tokico HTS. For a stockish ride I think Arne has it right with the GR2's.

Oy Rick, I installed KYBs and Eibach springs. I did the struts first the springs a year later, and was favorably impressed with the KYBs. Replaced Konis which were harsh.

I used Tokico blues in both cars - but they will give you a nose bleed with the regular springs. (height)
