Frankensteinz2 Posted August 21, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2009 Hey guys,I recently rebuilt my engine and while doing so i replaced the timing chain. As I was setting timing between the cam and the crank, I noticed I was a little off. I have a 240z with a pointer on the block and 5 marks on the pulley. I read in a thread that the farthest mark to the left is TDC. (please confirm) However my new chain from MSA is just shy of reaching this postion. With my crank at the far left mark, i am just to the right of the mark on the timing mark on cam tower 1. Is this a problem?I am so worried about this damn timing :paranoid:Any advice would be appreciatedFrankie
motorman7 Posted August 21, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2009 http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34777&highlight=refresh&page=3Check about 3/4th of the way down this page and you will see the cam timing marks and the crank timing marks along with the link marks (They are both offset by one link in the pics). Mine is a 240 also. The chain should have two marks (0's in the pics), 42 links apart. They should correspond with the cam and crank marks as shown in the pics. I believe in this configuration that the spline on the crank is facing up at 12 o'clock.
Frankensteinz2 Posted August 22, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted August 22, 2009 I apologize, with both sprockets timing marks on the bright links, and with my crank pulley on and lined up with TDC. My cam is a little to the RIGHT of the timing mark on timing tower 1. Just by a hair. Would it make since to put my cam one link back? or to the left? To compensate. motorman7 Posted August 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 22, 2009 I would keep the bright links lined up with the timing marks.

Frankensteinz2 Posted August 26, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted August 26, 2009 Ok, I have been working on getting my engine running, I think I am back to a timing issue. I have my engine turning over have i can't get it to fire. I have gas to the carburetors. And confirmed the proper wiring order order for the spark plugs. Finally i have turned that dizzy every which way and can 't get a fire. Any ideas what direction to go. Could this have to do with the timing situation earlier in this thread? Curtis240Z Posted August 26, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 26, 2009 Did you check the distributor drive timing (oil pump drive)?
Frankensteinz2 Posted August 26, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted August 26, 2009 yes, I aligned the divot on the oil pump with the dot on the gear, pushed it up through and the tang was a little to the right of the top nut and a little to the left of the bottom nut. motorman7 Posted August 26, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 26, 2009 When the motor is at #1 cylinder TDC, the offset blade that turns the distributor (looking down into the distributor mounting hole) should be at 11:25 O'clock.
Frankensteinz2 Posted August 26, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted August 26, 2009 It installed it at 11:25 thats correct. Still can't seem to get any fire.

Pull one of the plugs and turn engine over and look for spark)
