cam/ crank timing off?

At TDC the rotor should point somewhere in the range of the left hand snap tab on the top of distributor cap (facing it from the driver side). There is a line on the distributor cap that marks the #1 wire. Remember, the distributor turns counter clockwise when you plug in the firing order. Check the #1 wire for spark.....If you've got gas and fire you should be running. You're timing chain is correct if you lined up the bright links to crank and cam pulley at TDC.

I have spark, took out plug 1 and it sparked on the valve cover. I confirmed i have gas to the carbs ( took off the line into the carb and it was spewnin). I also did confirm at tdc my dist rotor is to spark plug one. I will add a pick as soon as i get my helper to click the car while i watch for tdc to come up.

Okay, so you have a spark and you confirmed the firing order ?

You have gas to the carbs, try to lift a dome piston and see if there is gas at the top of the nozzles, if you pull the choke, there should be, if your float valves are clogged you won't get gas further than to the float bowls, is your spark plugs wet ?

I had some stumble in getting the firing order but i think i finally got it 1,6,3,5,2,4 in counterclockwise order per the monroe book. I don't have any fuel on top of the nozzles with my choke full on, and my carb pistons seem to be droppin to fast. Need to study these carbs a little more.

I put a timiing light on my crank. If i retard the dizzy all the way I am almost in the right spot but I run out of room to turn anymore.

I read several opposing orders in the haynes then in Monroe's book. WTF why would it be different. Alright let me try that order and see what i get.

My pistons were dropping to fast, and I realized I did not put any Oil in them. They are now dropping slower and rising slower. However not quite in sync. I was thinkin of switching to ATF fluid instead.

As far as the dizzy goes, what should I do about not being able to line up the timing, as I can only retard the dist. so far, and it looks like it needs to go farther back? I'll keep researching.

Funny, I ran into the same problem when timing mine, only to find out that the dial on the back of the timing light was set to 10 degrees advanced. When I set it back to 0, the adjustment tab was right on the center line-perfect. Of course, that was after I had removed the screw facing up to the dizzy so I could go beyond the adjustment limits. When i did that, the car ran much worse, that how I figured something was wrong

So, the car must be running if you can check timing?
