71 240 with 350 Chevy

Hey Guys,

Just bought a beautiful v8 Z that i have question about.

When i was driving home i stopped at the store (after about 15 minutes of driving hard). When I came out the car had power but would not start (had to push start it). The only thing that i could figure is that the starter got really hot and for some reason this kept the car from starting. Anyone ever heard of that? The reason i say this is because after i got home, I let the car cool down, she started right up several times since (only driven round the block a few times). Any clues out there? Anyway taking pictures soon, this is a georgous car can't wait to show it.

don't know about about the problem, maybe the exhaust pipes (headers) are getting to close to the starter and heating it up alot possible...

but main reason of me posting this, was for you to check out www.hybridz.org they specialise in V8 Z's, not sure if you would have check that site out yet or not

Check to see how close your exhaust is to the starter, if it is close you might want to get a heat shield of some type between them or maybe even one of the starter heat barrier wraps. Sounds like a heat problem to me. See a lot of that even on cars that were V-8's to begin with, someone puts a header or changes the exhaust and it overheats the starter, sometimes it only happens when it sits still and the radiant heat off the exhaust uses the starter as a "heat sink". :cross-eye

I think if you look at Summit Racings website you can find one of the starter heat resistant wraps for an affordable price. Better than push starting.:tapemouth

That is a nice find. I am wondering what what V8 kit was used. Most of the GM kits have the motor so close to the fire wall that you need to move the hood latch. Now yours is far enough forward that it looks like they fit twin remote oil filters under the hood latch. Thats one clean install killer find.

Thermo-tec makes a good starter heat shield for under $25.00.

Sometimes on G.M. V8 starters the solenoids stick when they are hot. I have had a lot of them, and it seems to me that the not starting when they are hot is sometimes an early warning that the solenoid is about to fail... but perhaps not.

At least on the G.M. the starter is replaceable separately.

BTW, never use an old solenoid on a new starter... parts stores will sell them that way, but you will end up heaving that stupid thing up into the air again really soon...

( I just LOVE holding that stupid motor up in the air with my left hand while I thread the two mounting bolts in with my right...

Just sold this Z a few of weeks ago to get a down payment for another car (new one) for work. I originally bought it from a guy in Sonoma. I miss all the hp all ready!!

I still have my 66 Stang with 350 horse though, so when i need a fix i go for a spin around the block in that!

only problem with the motor that far forward is there has got to be severe bump steer....the motor is riding on the front wheels excessively....that is why having the distributor under the latch is such a superior setup.

Would hate driving this rig all the time.
