vercingetorix Posted September 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 3, 2009 I'm in the process of dropping the differential and am wondering if I can remove it with only un-bolting the top of the half shaft where it connects to the differential. My qustion is, should it push back along the splines enough to clear the bolts and drop down? I seem to need about 3/8 of an inch more to clear. Just tryng to avoid messing with the wheel side end,at least until its a little easier to get at.Thanks,HCH
Zs-ondabrain Posted September 3, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 3, 2009 It should compress enought to clear the diff.
vercingetorix Posted September 4, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted September 4, 2009 It should compress enought to clear the diff. Can't quite get the bugger, I'll give it another go in a bit. Also, can I safely remove the swing arms and spindle pins and leave it standing on its wheels or is it too unstable that way?
Zs-ondabrain Posted September 4, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 4, 2009 Not real sure, I wouldn't suggest it though. Just support the body on the rear. I have CV's and have to pull the wheel outwards by unbolting the control arm near the diff. Then the CV clears the bolts enough to drop or instal.Just support it and be safe Henry. You gotta stay alive long enough to instal all the stuff I did for ya and drive the damn car. BTW, I'll have your SCP's ready to ship on Monday.Dave
=Enigma= Posted September 4, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 4, 2009 Setting the car on the rear wheels without any lateral support for the struts doesn't sound like a good idea. You could damage the strut tower or the strut insulator. There is no good reason to do this and more then a half dozen not to..
Zs-ondabrain Posted September 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 4, 2009 Like I said, Don't be dumb and you won't be dead, or hurt the Z. That's an even bigger NO NO.
vercingetorix Posted September 4, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted September 4, 2009 Thats kind of what I thought and why I asked ya'll before I tried it. I just want to get this apart and over with so I can start reassembling it, put in all the cool stuff I got from Dave and drive the little weasel! I reckon I'll put a large piece of timber all the way across the body and rest that on three or four jack stands. Luckily all of the bolts and such have loosened right up so hopefully that won't develop into a nightmare. Thanks for all the input it is greatly appreciated.HCH
