Posted October 20, 200222 yr comment_17309 Can any of my fellow Australians give me some idea of what a good paint job is worth here. I know there are plenty of variables like preparation and type of paint but I am just trying to weigh up the following options to utilise my 260z 2+2 bits:1. buy a 260z shell for around AUS$2,000 and strip and re-spray; or2. buy a 260z that has been offered minus the bits I already have (engine, box, etc.) but which has been recently resprayed for AUS$5,000.Any thoughts guys? October 20, 200222 yr comment_17311 Its pretty impossible to determine the cost of a decent paint job, but somewhere about 5-7 thousand seems about right for a good 2-pac paint with minor bodywork etc thrown in. However you can buy the 260, but who is to say what's underneath the paint, other than the guy who is trying to offload it. When it comes to shifty paint jobs, its not that hard to cover up rust etc with bog, newspaper etc etc. THe list of potential bodges is amazing, and unless the guy will guarentee the quality, or you can "fix" him at a later date if he was lying, it may be best to steer away from a fresh repeaint. 2000 for a 260 shell seems a bit over the top to me, but i may be wrong. October 20, 200222 yr comment_17312 mattters what u want, if u just want a simple respray, between 2000-5000, depending on the preperation you want, and the qaulity, 5000, is something that is very nice, but not supurp, i know a friend that is getting full bare metal respray, for around 8g, but it will come out better than originalfor most people they just want to save some cash and by the 5000, one, but i bought a 76 for 2g and spent some cash on it, just about to start pulling it down for a respray, and some rust repair, but this way i know that i will have it done properly, and it will be the way i want it. You don't want to spend 5g on a nice Z, then to give it 6months and see some rust coming though the paint etc.. so take a good look at the 5g one, and make sure it is worth the money Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3319-cost-of-a-good-paint-job-in-oz/#findComment-17312 Share on other sites
October 20, 200222 yr comment_17316 Hi Nigel$5k seems to be the average price for a good bare metal job, I've just been quoted that price for my 240 but this price was on the assumption that there will be no major rot to contend with.A bare metal is the way to go, if you don't know the car a normal paint job could well be money down the drain!!The paint shop I spoke to suggested that they would probably look to bead blast the shell (approx cost $800) and then call me to discuss any rot found.RegardsLee Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3319-cost-of-a-good-paint-job-in-oz/#findComment-17316 Share on other sites
October 20, 200222 yr comment_17317 Hire a compressor for a monthBuy all the materialsPractice for a bitDo it all againGo to Fiji for 2 weeksAnd you'll still have $3000 to spend on the rest of the car.If its not metallic its not that hard.Give it a goNick Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3319-cost-of-a-good-paint-job-in-oz/#findComment-17317 Share on other sites

October 20, 200222 yr comment_17319 Been there, seen it and done it and have a shabby car as a result, by all means do the prep work, but for christs sake get someone to put on the top coat. Its not as easy as it looks, and two pac has isocyinates in it (bad). October 21, 200222 yr comment_17363 Do not buy that 260z unless you can see the entire shell and can see inside the doors and under the floors etc... If I had the time again I'd buy a 240z for a couple of hundred dollars and make sure the chassis was good not worry about the doors and panels there the cheap part. I'd go from there new everything for around 12k I'd have a nice 240z on the road and not have to worry about rust for another 30 years.
