Posted September 15, 200915 yr comment_294751 I need a muffler for a 76 280. Been driving it since 1980. Looking for something not radically loud. Car is basically stock and I want to keep it that way. Don't need headers and I just changed the cat. Direct fit preferred. Magnaflow?, Flowmaster?, Bosal?. All suggestions appreciated. September 15, 200915 yr comment_294772 Dynomax Turbo . I bought mine from Summit Racing. they are not too much money , but most of all have a great sound and free flowing. Not too loud. My Z sounds like a E-Jag. Much depends on the size of the exhaust pipe size. I am running a 21/2'' which is louder . So if you have anything like a 2'' or so you wont have any trouble. I looked and listened to Magnaflow and Flowmaster , they have a raspy sound so if this is what you are after there you go...Gary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/33191-need-muffler-recommendations/#findComment-294772 Share on other sites
September 15, 200915 yr comment_294777 I am too looking for a muffler as well. What is the stock exhaust size? is it 2 1/4?I have been reading about the dynomax turbo like beandip has recommended and it seems nice. September 15, 200915 yr comment_294783 You can still get a Monza "cat back" from Pacesetter for 260-280. (240 is disco.)I installed one a few weeks ago, went on without effort and is alot quieter than I would have thought from reading posts concerning it, although it isnt burned in yet, Ive only driven 10 miles on it. A bit louder than the generic that was on there but not much.It does stick out further from the rear but I did notice in my short drive that I didnt notice any fumes, a big plus IMO.You can get them from Black Dragon still or do what I did and go Ebay and save about $40. Got it in 3 days and it was perfect from this place.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/75-76-77-78-Datsun-280Z-Pacesetter-MONZA-Exhaust_W0QQitemZ390086683281QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5ad2fa6a91&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/33191-need-muffler-recommendations/#findComment-294783 Share on other sites
October 2, 200915 yr comment_296262 I'm also looking for a muffler. My 78 280z has the full msa dynomax exhaust. Since I replaced my bumpers and shaved the rear know I have about 8 inches sticking out. I could always cut the pipe and shorten it, but the car has a meaner look and I want a muffler that would go with it. I was thinking apexi, dynomax turbo and also megan has a muffler that I see alot at the Z shows. Any suggestions. Once it burns in it's kinda like a nice old Marshall Stack with a Les Paul...........great sound. I got mine for my 240 before it was discontinued.......love it! I am getting to tear into the rear end next so it might be awhile longer. Im not thrilled with the 280 mufflers looks, the 240 (vertical) looks much nicer. With the stock manifold a 40 series is not loud at all. With the header, I had to add a glass pack in the middle of my exhaust. Here's my thread, currently just below this if you're curious to hear the flow with the glass pack.
