Rear Suspension and Stub Axles

Is there a way to visually tell if the rear suspention parts and stub axles are from a 240Z or 280Z or 280ZX and from an R180 or R200? I have some rear suspension parts that I'm needing to identify.

240Z stub axles have a 25 spline section for the companion flange and the 280Z stub axles have a 27 spline. 280Z rear control arms noticeably stronger on each end where the lateral arms meet the inner shaft and the outer eyes.

Ok, those splines are a challenge to count and I swear I counted 29 of them...I even counted a second time. Does that make any sense?

Ok, I got a yellow "lumber yard" crayon and used it to aid in counting the splines again marking every 10 splines. I still got 29! Are these from a 300ZX?

The piece that fits into the diff which you then bolt the half shaft to.

Is this the wrong name/term for this part? My understanding has always been that this is the stub axle and then the piece (actually more than one held together by u-joints) that bolts to this and to the wheel hub on the other end was the half shaft.

The correct term is "side axle" although stub axle is often used. Disregard the information I gave you above. What you have are side axles that fit in an R200 differential out of either a 280Z or a 280ZX.

The info above, was that for the other end...the one that's attached to the hub?

Typically, a "Stub Axle" is the peice that is double stuffed with bearings and is mounted to the Strut assembly. The "Stub axle" gets or has 4 studs to mount your wheels to it.

I think that is what the spline count John gave you at first was for.

I just want to be sure I'm clear on what these parts came from as I have someone asking to buy them and want to ensure they are the correct part for his application.

What I have are the part that has the 4-lugs on them for the wheel to attach to, they pass through the wheel hub at the bottom of the strut tube. They have 29 splines. Are these from the 280Z and 280ZX as stated above?
