Tires??

The old A008's were a good race tire many years ago. Never used one of their street tires so I can't give an opinion. Yokes are a good tire, probably as good as any on the market. They are just starting to take all their 14 inch tires off the market like everyone else, which is not good for those of us that still need/want 14 inch tires.

Well I have the tires on the car.. They are very responsive, and seem to be capable of generating quite a bit of turning force. I drove in today in some light rain, and the wet performance is better the the dry performance of the tires I had before these. I plan to autocross them on 11/3 so that will give a real good chance to push them hard. I will update again after I run the competition.

I am currently running a set of 14 inch A539 series Yokies in sprint races in Oz. They are also the preferred tyre by a number of other drivers.

Overall comment, they are a good tyre which are pretty responsive. Seem to squeal a bit (so do a lot of other tyres) but the best thing is that if they are starting to let go, they let you know.

My biggest problem is that sprint races are short events (4 laps of a 1 mile circuit on average) and they take a bit of heat to get working well. Once hot you can really tell the difference.

The A008's are still pretty popular here in Oz.

I'm in the process right now of searching out new tires for my car. But the Yokohama AVS's are a little on the high side for me right now. I'd like to have them but there are cheaper alternatives.

For those of us out there that like to race though, another tire was suggested to me by a Porsche guy. Falken's AZENIS RS. This tire is one step down from an actual race compound for the street. I have seen this guy run an 8 cyl. 911 on these tires hard through an endurance race and they stuck like glue! And they are cheaper than the Yoko's. They are good for driving on the street, too. Although I was told you won't get more than about 20k miles on the street with these tires. Check 'em, out....

I've heard good things about the Falken tires also. For the price they may be the way to go. I have a set of Toyo Proxes that I like quite well (Z rated street tires). Another option are Kumho. Like the Toyo, they wear well. I really like the look of the Falken tread pattern.

On a side note... can you guys down under get Hoosier tires? Once you race on those you won't want to run anything else.

I paid $94.00 each mounted balanced and out the door for mine... They are 205/60/14.. I got AVS ES100, this is a realtively new model (I think) So far I am very impressed. Especially with the wet traction. It's almost like there is no water on the raod, these tires really stick well. My Autocross class is E Street Prepared. I am currently trying to make sure that is the right class.
