Fuel Check Valve

Hey, has anyone put together a database of commonly available alternatives to Nissan NLA parts? If not, shouldn't we (as a community) do this?

There was supposedly a booklet available with common substitutions, but I was never able to find it anywhere.

Can you get at the part without removing the fuel pump?

BTW, rockAuto.com doesn't list a Volvo 240 for any year 1976 - 1981, but other models in the 200 series..

I was wondering the same thing, Tomo. I don't know. (I won't be back under my car for some time now.)

I know the fuel pump is back there, but I rarely get it in a lift, and it's a maze of tubes, wires and undercoating, so things are hard to find.

From what I recall, you can remove the check valve without removing the fuel pump from the car.

I thought I'd share my findings here on this forum, so that others in need of check valves would be able to source them. Stupid me. :stupid:

Now somebody reading this thread has apparently gone and bought up all the Volvo 240 check valves, which are out of production. (reddat?)

I tried to carry out my usual practice of ordering a replacement part, plus an addition item as a spare. I'm being sent one part, but am being refunded my purchase of the second part. Everyplace I've called/emailed is out.

... so I've contacted this guy who makes check valves for ultralight aircraft, and I've pitched the idea to him of making aftermarket check valves for 280Zs and early Volvo 240s. Think positive thoughts, everyone!

In the case of this check valve you don't have to go through that. The Volvo part will work. Finding one, apparently, is the problem. I've even verified this with Elvan, formerly of Z Car Specialty in Upland, Ca. You likely don't know who he is but I would take his word on this, or anything Z or Datsun related.

FastWoman, whenever you get some spare time, search 'reddat' on this or other Datsun sites. Interesting story.

Yeah, I already know all about reddat. I bought several parts from him in the beginning of this project. I did ask him up front to quote me combined shipping charges, so I don't think I got the short end of the stick on anything. That said, I don't think I would be likely to do business with him again. Among other things, I was far less than impressed with his packing.

Anyway, I can see it now -- Genuine Nissan fuel pump check valves with barbed nipples. Rare! A must for your restoration! I REALLY would like to see an aftermarket source surface for this part, 'cuz this sort of hoarding practice is really sleazy.

BTW, the ultralight aircraft guy just told me he isn't interested in taking on another big project (check valves). Ah well.

The other idea you mentioned earlier would also work. There has to be some kind of inline check valve in existence that would work. Then you could just replace the old check valve with a hose barb, which I'm sure you could find a hardware store, and put the inline valve just beyond the fuel filter. I actually think that that would be an upgrade since the valve would still serve it's purpose plus it would be protected by the fuel filter.
