and cannot afford to have the clock refurbished. It did not bother me at all. I went to the auto parts store and saw this desktop clock that looks like it's gonna fit on the non working Z clock. Test fit it and it worked.

I used a double sided tape for the body to hold on to the frame

Routed the wire for the 1.5v battery for replacement

light still go through the side, so when you turn the dash lights, it still looks like a stock Z clock.

The needle (seconds and hour hand) will fit directly to the desktop clock but the hole where the needle sits needs to enlarge a little bit. but i like this one.

Thanks...

Yeah these are temporary needles. as im working on putting the needles from the stock. i may have to bore it out a little bit. and it will fit perfectly.

as for the light, you can see it in the dark but if the lights where white color, it will be much brighter.

Looks very nice! If that doesn't work out, you can also make a bezel to fit the circular hole, and fit a digital clock in there. I did that with my old '75 model (clock had already failed by the time I bought it, at a mere 8 years of age). My '78 apparently has a reproduction clock (from the previous owner) that looks original. I don't know where you can find them, but they're out there somewhere.

... but VERY nice job! :)

I was in shock! when I saw this thread! I have done the very similar work with the same clock I got at Pepboys or Autozone 5 years ago!( I had a 240Z clock, and you have 280Z clock, so you are in better position here.)

Except for the movement. What I did was to use needles off a 280Z clock, which fits right on this clock. And Use the original movement. Only cons are that I cannot not change time and battery from front side. So I even extended the battery side...... *And adjust knob must to be cut and glue onto the lense(fake) But it serves its job at the cheapest cost! * The light behind the clock will not function right y the way.

  • 2 weeks later...
cool mod. that's even better. still looks stock. hows the time on that? is it off? or just about the same as the stock? I will try and remove the face and use the stock face and see if the time is the same.

by the way, i like the battery holder. :)

Clock today, is much better than the clock made 40 years ago.

You can obtain battery ho;der at Radio shack or Fry's electrics......
