scotts pearl Posted November 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2009 Need some help.. i just had a muffler shop install a magnaflow muffler today... i was hoping for more noise..not so.. i currently have straight pipe with no cat or resonator... pipe is 2in and mufffler is 2 1/4 inlet and 2 1/4 outlet... with slight turn down tip..:stupid: ( stock manifold) 78 280 5speed:
Arne Posted November 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2009 Sounds like you need to go with a different muffler to me.

70 Cam Guy Posted November 5, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 5, 2009 Do you have the stock manifold? That makes a drastic difference. Everywhere I read a 40 series flow would be too loud, I'd need a resonator, etc. With the cast iron manifold, it sounded fantastic, sounded like a mild exhaust. I installed my header and it was suddenly a different beast altogether. I could no longer hear my stock radio on the freeway and I was suddenly worried about noise pollution tickets. I had to add a glass pack in the middle to tame it, and I consider myself pretty tolerant of noisy carsPoint being, the big cast iron manifold really quiets down the exhaust. The other cars with Magnaflow's may have had headers. Also if you have a glass-wrapped perforated tube style muffler, it will get a little louder as it breaks in. Pipe diameter, wall thickness, material (SS or normal steel) can also influence but I have less personal experience with that.
scotts pearl Posted November 5, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted November 5, 2009 thanks for the info..sounds like a ferrari i guess know..may try larger pipe.i noticed today pipe comimg from manifold was 2 1/2 down pipe then 2inch back to muffler then muffler is 2 1/4.. so i have three differnt sizes.. does this affect performance in anyway? 70 Cam Guy Posted November 6, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 6, 2009 There is certainly debate on pipe diameter but most of what I see settles on 2 1/4 or 2 1/2. I personally have 2.5" from the header back. If you replaced the 2" section with 2 1/4 or 2.5, it may help, but I don't know that you would notice a significant difference. Going to a larger diameter mid section could make it louder but that could be a pricey experiment. Going to a 2 1/4 mid pipe would certainly clean up the exhaust and it would all be the same size
FastWoman Posted November 10, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 10, 2009 My Mustang PO had installed big exhaust tips. They made a lot of noise, if you like that sort of thing -- sort of a mellow note, but too loud for my taste. Anyway, per his account, they gave him a lot more noise. (I never altered the exhaust on that car, so I wouldn't know.)And yeah, headers make a HUGE, HUGE difference. I once bought a Suburban 4x4 with junky headers and replaced with OEM manifolds. That tamed the beast. The truck was instanty transformed from obnoxious to refined. Performance didn't really suffer much.
240ZMan Posted November 10, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 10, 2009 And yeah, headers make a HUGE, HUGE difference. The cam will make a difference too. If you have plans to change cams any time soon, wait until you do that before you make any more exhaust changes.
