Front Struts....Advice?

Recommended Posts

I'm in need of a new set of struts for the front end of my 1976 280z. I am new to the magical world of restoration and am just looking for some advice on what type of struts I should be looking for, brand and that sort.... am I asking the right questions?? Thought I'd check in with the experts. Since I've been on this site its been nothing but helpful!

Thanks in advance for any help!

WOW, an hour and a half and someone didn't jump on this one. You guys sleeping at your desks or what???

John,

I personally use KYB struts and they are a great after-market replacement for your stock struts. $110 for a pair. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PSDC02A/23-4030

But I highly suggest doing all 4 at the same time.

Here are the rears for only $100 http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PSDC02A/23-4031

There are plenty of other brands but if you're only replacing stock struts, and not lowering the Z, then the KYB's will work great, and for a good price. Also order some new Bump stops while you're at it.

Hey Dave thanks a lot for the response!

Those KYB struts were the ones I was looking at but I wanted another opinion first. I'll be getting a set of front and rear ones shortly. I'll have to pick up some new bumb stops as suggested. Thanks again!

Will bumb stops keep people from asking me for money on the street? No wait...that would be a bum stop. Where can I get one of those? :D

I too think the KYBs are a good OE replacement choice. But be warned - since they are a gas-charged shock they will quite likely raise your car's ride height by about 1/2" (12-15mm) or so when used with stock springs. Not that you have much choice, all of the OE replacement choices are gas-charged. But don't be surprised if that happens.

KYB-G2s , The bump stops , energy suspension . Nissan is selling them now since they no longer have the OEM rubber. These are polly but soft and are what I used on all four corners. I did lower my 240 and used the KYBs so it will work fine . But there is a limit on how far you can drop the Z. If you are looking for origional hight and you don't mind the Z higher slightly then don't concern your self with this. I removed some from the springs . But that is another thread. Do a search there are several posts on this issue when Arne and I were going through this. LOL
