peterc Posted October 27, 2002 Share #2 Posted October 27, 2002 Zed is the British (and Canadian and Australian) way of pronouncing the letter Z, as opposed to Zee which is the American pronounciation. Cheers
Alfadog Posted October 27, 2002 Share #3 Posted October 27, 2002 In other words, the original way to say it! I don't know how it came about that Americans decided to say Zee, but I believe it was probably the same guy who decided it would be a good idea to drive on the wrong side of the road and call aluminium aluminum... to be different from the British Anyone know how the Japanese say it? LEE240ZPERTH Posted October 28, 2002 Share #6 Posted October 28, 2002 Hi Dero You say "it's zee car" makes you sound like a frenchmanLOL We can settle this debate fairly easily The English invented the English language and pronounce Z as Zed. Americans speak English (most of the time) but you never did quite get the hang of some of the pronunciations. Now you know the error of your ways I am sure you will see the light and pronounce the letter Z as it was originally intended (that's ZED for those of you who still have trouble) Please don't thank me for the lesson, it was my pleasure!! Victor Laury Posted October 28, 2002 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2002 Left-handed cars are Zee'sWhilst the right handed varity are Zed'sNo, wait that's not right either, Canadian cars are also Zed's.Ok, so it not that simple. I live in Los Angeles and I drive a 1972 Datsun 240Z (Zee). My buddy from Ontario comes over and tells me I've got the bitchen Zed.Which ever pronunciation you choose to use, Drive your Classic Datsun Sports car with the joy that only a Datsun Sports nut can understand, no matter what the language! Mike Posted October 28, 2002 Share #10 Posted October 28, 2002 Just don't ask an Aussie to say the word Mach. I still like the way we say it much better.... MAWK. I'm flying MAWK five in my 2-billion dollar jet. Aussies say MACK. Just doesn't sound impressive enough to me. There's a ton of different ways we pronounce the same words. I had a lot of fun for the 2-months I was in Aus. Not sure why, but, catching on to the dialect was very easy for me. I noticed that a lot of my slang was in use. Got a cool book called Aussie Slang when I was there. Should pull it out and start makin some shielas out of these mates.
