I wish to replace the carpets in my 72z - this is NOT a restoration, but I want to be somewhat period sensitive - look style carpet will be used

I want to carpet the transmission tunnel and the area above the door scuff plates - I am not a fan of the diamond vinyl in these areas.

can you give me some advice?

- get a custom intaller?

- is there a molded kit from a later year? - maybe 260z,(I could do the work myself)

- some other multi piece kits out there to use?

I see a ton of suppliers on the internet -

Any help would be appreciated

regards Dave

Carpeting areas that are normally vinyled wouldn't be Period Correct. The good thing about removable carpet is the ability to replace it. Glued in carper will retain the bad smells, stains and fading. Vinyl is easily cleaned and wiped down.

To each his own, but replacible items are always the smart call.

Check with Motorsport auto ( http://www.zcarparts.com/ ) for different styles of carpet. As well as http://www.zcarsource.com/

Trimming and Installing carpet is not difficult-I am going to be doing both to Larrys car in the next month or so, and will be making up a technical article when I do. I have ordered enough carpet yardage to cover the floors, the rear strut towers, and the Rear speaker panel. If you aren't in a rush, that article might help you. It will take part of a couple of days to carpet his car-with some recovery time for hands in between.

I'd like to ask a question here on carpet. Did the original carpet attach to the floor with some kind of snap on fastener? I seem to remember my 71 240Z did have the carpets attached that way. My current car, a 70 240Z has 4 screw holes on both the driver's side floor and passenger's side floor for a total of 8 screw holes; two in front of the seat and two behind. Are these holes for the original carpet fasteners or did a PO put them in for some reason?

My '70 had two snaps on the front part of the carpets where it attached to the firewall. There were no rear snaps, however I believe there may have been velcro strips at one time at the rear of the carpet. These became clogged with debris and were virtually useless.

At one time someone must have added screws or snaps to your floors to account for the extra holes.
