Has anyone else here found themselves buying parts you really don't need just to save them from the crusher? I just dropped $100 at Pick & Pull and picked up what appears to be a high quality freshly rebuilt starter, right sugar scoop, 280z front hubs and very clean valve cover.

What got crushed was a 77' 280z 2+2 with perfect front fenders, transverse links, 3.7 R180, straight doors, windshield and hatch glass, and clean HVAC fan. Do the doors and rear hatch glass fit the 240z?

The car also had what appeared to be a relatively low mileage (based on the cleanliness and condition of the valve train) P79/F54 ATK replacement engine. If I didn't already have one of these combos sitting in the garage I would have taken this one.

There was only one other Z in the yard and it was an identical car to the one above. 77' 280z 2+2 Automatic. I believe this one has an N42/N42 and is where I got the fresh starter from. Everything else is still there.

Funny,,,, when I got my Z home and started looking through it I found it needed some things. I called the local yard not expecting them to have a Z, they said they had a 72 (HLS30-60414 R.I.P.)

So I went and found a nice lime green all stock car with a smashed in tail. I bought the trim parts I was after. but couldn't stop thinking about the perfect shape dash in the car. I asked about the crushing and was told once they have made enough profit it gets crushed.

A week later I went and got the dash $100 for the complete set up gauges, radio, glove box, heater controls. the works. I know it is different than my 70 but how could I pass it up. As it turns out the clock still works!!!

Next time I was back there someone else had found it and many body parts were gone.

I was again considering going back and picking up some other spare parts just because.

Damn, I have been looking for an R180 3.7 or 3.54! No Zs in the junkyards in this part of the world though!

I felt bad about finding a later model turbo Z in the Pick-A-Part last year. It was complete, including the turbo, and had no body damage or broken glass. It had nothing that I could use on my '71. I hope someone came along later in need of just about everything before it went to the crusher. Generally, the early Zs I see are pretty well picked over by the time I find them. But, I'm heading out tomorrow to see what I can find.

When in doubt, do one of two things:

a) take everything whether you personally need them or not, and/or

post where the subject vehicle is so others can go and take what they need

DO NOT leave them for the crusher.......

As a matter of fact I'm going to a pick n pull place tomorrow. There was a 1978 280z 2+2 there about a weeks ago when I last went. I'm hoping it is still there. Does anyone need any parts? When I was there most of the drive train was gone but there were still some odds and ends on it.

A year before the refurbishment I had a gentleman visit one of my garage sales where I had some junk cars, cheap. He owned a salvage yard, metal recycler, car collector, he bought 2 and asked about the Z in the back room. He said 'Hope you don't need any parts, I just crushed all 22 I had last week'.
