Octane/lead sub

ROFL I have looked at some past posts regarding octane and the use of lead sub. Seems to be a variety of opinion. I am looking for a general all purpose answer. My car is a '72 with an L24 engine stock with original valve seats, etc. Am I safest in using the highest octane rated gas - 91 or 92 - and lead substitute?

I love the car and would like to improve the performance a bit. I am not interested in jackrabbit starts, racing, or high end speed. What I do like is the acceleration in 4th at around 60 mph. At the risk of sounding naive or lacking knowledge in such things, is there a simple way to increase that acceleration?
