I'm running a 5 speed that I got out of a '82 ZX. I got the donor car for 300 bux from a salvage yard, put the engine and tranny in my '73. I did a leak down test on all the cylinders to insure the L28 was in good shape. It is running SU carbies instead of the fuel injection. With the help of another Z car nut, I opened the tranny to inspect the internals and clean it up real good. I replaced the seals on the input shaft & output shaft. You can download a service manual from carfiche.com if you decide to take the DIY approach.

I would expect to pay $175.00 to $250.00 for a 5 spd. worth rebuilding. Then $550.00 to $650.00 to have one professionally and completely rebuilt. Depends on where you are... to some extent.

FWIW,

Carl B.

Hey Julio, who did you get the quote from? If I puss out on rebuilding my own or run into a snag, I may be in the market for a quote minus the parts which I already have on hand.

I think I figured out the discrepancy. If you have to buy the parts at a normal markup, that should add about $200 - $250 to the cost of the rebuild. The rest of it works out to 5ish hours at $60-75 per hour. I don't know current labor rates, but if parts are included in that $550 that sounds more reasonable to me.
