December 18, 200915 yr comment_303654 Have been told the degradation of the rubber boots is a result of the grease used when lubing the ball joints. Have gone back through the old Factory Service Manuals and tried getting the grease they recommend, however they still turned to tar/goo. Anybody have any grease recommendations. I had used a Castrol grease. Sorry for the twist to the thread. December 18, 200915 yr Author comment_303660 I called MSA and asked why the ball joint sent did not match the picture on their order page. They smarted off and said they had not updated the picture yet, they have been shipping these for the past year and have had good luck with them. If i did not like them to send them back, so i did. They really need to work on their customer relations skills. Called Blackdragon and talked to their A+ real human not like the test tube baby from MSA. December 26, 200915 yr comment_304224 I just installed a pair of ball joints on my 71 240Z that i bought from Motorsport Auto and they look just like yours. No zirk, and sealed of course. Also, the first thing I noticed was that my original ball joints had a castle nut and cotter pin. I thought I would re-use the castle nut and drill my own hole through the stud, except that the diameter of the new stud is much smaller than the original. So, I go ahead and start trying to assemble these using the cheesy "nylon locking nut" only to find out that when I try to bolt the whole assembly to the bottom of the strut, the stud on the new ball joint is about 1/4" too long, so my hack saw took care of that. Well, at least the taperd part of the ball joint stud seems to be correct in size and dimension. Since I am in the process of restoring this car and the front end is basically gutted, I won't know how these ball joints work out for awhile. My next set will come from Nissan no matter what they cost. December 27, 200915 yr Author comment_304264 You should contact MSA a let them know what problems you had. I have not bought replacement ball joints yet, i am worried about the tie rod ends i received from them also. If they sell cheep junk like this, i would just have saved money on shipping and received it faster buying on ebay. December 27, 200915 yr Author comment_304270 I need help too. Courtesy Nissan does NOT carry the Nissan OEM ball joints anymore (at least it's not on their website). Can someone recommend a good source. Where can I get Spicer ball joints?http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240z-280z-Precision-Ball-Joints-Tie-Rod-Ends_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53dd4cfc95QQitemZ360195095701QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessorieshttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissan-240z-260z-280z-Lower-Front-Ball-Joints_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53deb987c4QQitemZ360218986436QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/34110-ball-joints-from-msa/?&page=2#findComment-304270 Share on other sites
December 27, 200915 yr comment_304292 I know e bay has cheap parts but some times they do not. I bought a set of ball joints and were great, had the grease fitting and the snap ring. Years ago I had bad experiences with MSA but these past years they been great. Napa has the Ball joint also. December 27, 200915 yr Author comment_304296 Thanks, i will check with them they seem to have higher quality parts than Autozone and Advanced. Any parts that sell only Gates belts and hoses has to be good :classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/34110-ball-joints-from-msa/?&page=2#findComment-304296 Share on other sites
December 27, 200915 yr comment_304297 Napa has good quality parts, they just do not seem to compete with life waranties and prices but I do not mind as long as I can get a good part. I do buy my Gate belts there also, they also have the long zirk fitting that you can replace on you half shafts and will make it very easy to lubricate. January 22, 201015 yr comment_307005 Dragging up a slightly old thread but this is worth sharing. The Nissan ball joint p/n is 40160-A8625 (not a series 1 of course) and they are available through Courtesy online. Currently $99.68 ea. FWIW the S30 stuff is not always the easiest to find on Courtesy's website without a p/n as they do not offer expanded parts drawing like they do for the later models. January 22, 201015 yr Author comment_307045 Thanks for the p/n, Mike finally did a check on all orders and found out my CD order had fallen thru the cracks and got one on the way. This will help me look up parts :classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/34110-ball-joints-from-msa/?&page=2#findComment-307045 Share on other sites
