Barrett Jackson Scottsdale

The biggest of the big auctions has started along with the coverage from the SPEED Channel. I happen to watch quiet a bit of the coverage every year, truly some amazing cars, rare and like nothing I will ever get to be around. I find some of the prices totally beyond reason and level of work and money that has gone into some of the restorations and modifications staggering.

Many boards will light up this weekend as "thier" car goes across the block for a huge sum of money. Some say the coverage of the auction has driven up prices, making getting into collector cars more expensive, some say it has drawn more people to the hobby seeing all the high level cars.

The early 240Z are now starting to get into most B Level collectable lists. I didnt get my Z for a collector, I got mine for a fun GT that I can take back and forth with some fun.

Did you get your Z for collection or fun?

Is Barrett Jackson good or bad for the hobby?

Are you going to watch the coverage?

1) Fun...a little aggravation...and a lot of fun...

2) Good...bringing more enthusiasts in has driven prices up, but now more people think we're just that cool...

3) Yeah...but I'm stuck in a hotel room without Speed...will watch on the weekend on Speed HD...my dad and a couple of my buddies (one is on a Shelby hunt...) are there and will have to give me the play by play...

I love watching the Barrett-Jackson Auctions on the Speed Channel, particularly the big one in Scottsdale. Some years there is a 240Z or two, but Speed never shows them on their coverage. My first car was a '67 Pontiac GTO, my younger brother's first car was a '57 Chevy 2 door hardtop and a lot of my friends had muscle cars in high school in the mid-to-late '70s, so I definitely have a great interest in these auctions.

I have had 6 Z cars, 3 ZX's, and 3 240's. I currently have a 73Z.

I have had them since I turned 16 in 1989, and they were dime a dozen. I remember going to the junk yard and getting anything I needed. I would buy and sell 240's for $2000-$4000.

I honestly think that the internet has made most desirable cars to go up in price. I have also had several Vintage 50's VW Beetles, and before the internet, they were pretty cheap as well, and now the are through the roof, along with the parts, and for the most part, these cars are not that scarce.

But, I have always got into these cars for the fun, and have never thought of the value as far as collectable. I have driven nice 240Z's everyday, rain or shine, to work, long trips, after all that what there meant for, and will probably always do so, but maybe in the future I will have a couple parts cars in the back.

If this weather improves, will go in person by Friday ...

Same here, my wife wants to go also which is kind of nice!

I haven't gone to BJ for several years, I started going in the late 80's/early 90's. This was when the muscle cars weren't restored at all, they were in original, unmolested condition and they were fabulous! This is where I also got to see an F40 and a Porsche 959 for the first time.

For me the WOW factor has slipped a bit. There are so many incredible vehicles that roll through that it has become a little ho-hum. AND in some ways it has turned into an event for the wealthy. Maybe I'm just jealous!

Still, it is nice to see the cars in person, the level of quality and workmanship is the best there is. I don't think the TV camera captures how nice they really are.

I'm looking forward to it, we just need the weather to cooperate.

BJ has done absolutely no good for our hobby. Also it has drawn only "speculators" to the car biz.

On Saturday there is a all Datsun swap meet going on in Glendale from 7 to 3pm.

And don't forget about Pavillions on Saturday night-biggest nite of the year.
