09/70 240Z purchase - what to do

So I was at a local Cars & Coffee show with my 240Z and a guy walks up with this story:

Has a 240Z in the garage, owned for 4 years. Purchased with no transmission so he had a 5 speed installed. Wants to sell today.

Well, I drive out to his house and out of the garage he backs out a silver 09/70 240Z.

So I am looking at the car, no apparent rust on the wheel wells, floor boards, or fenders. The car was reshot 2 years ago with a Volvo color. (Masked off the weatherstripping.) All weatherstripping in good shape. Engine compartment is black w/the id tag covered in over spray. Oil is leaking from the front seal. The fan is removed and he has added two electric fans to the front of the radiator. Radiator replaced 2-years ago. Aftermarket wheels. Seats need recovering. Pioneer radio w/ 6x9 speaker set on the rear deck.

Wants $1000. Clean title.

I know what you all would say.. gotta be nuts to walk away from this one. My dilemma is that I would want to "refresh" it. I just completed one car, what would I do with a second.

My question for those of you who “show” your car: Can I expect people to walk up to me with opportunities like this on occasion? I would like to pass on this car waiting for a 1969 production project.

It's not just limited to those who show their cars. In fact, those who routinely attend dedicated Datsun or JDM shows may not get this much at all.

But if you participate in mixed-make shows, and especially if yours is the only Z in the show, it can happen. And it doesn't have to be at shows. I found my current red 240Z this way - rather I should say that the previous owner found me. He saw me working on my previous car in my driveway, and the discussion started from there.

Arne,

I am hopeful that as I continue to drive and show the car more opportunities for additional 240Z ownership present themselves. I can only imagine that keeping my car out of public sight has cost me buying "opportunities" over the years.

Darn, if I was still moving to Henderson, Tx this would be the first thing bought before a place to stay LOL. Go ahead and buy it, don't touch it then turn around and flip it for at least 1500. Then buy some groceries or something :) .
