72 Center Console Connections??

OK I am working on my 72 and the electrics seem relatively un-molested. I pulled out the aftermarket radio and the center console. I removed a couple splices and wire twist jobs that were obviously "aftermarket". The rest looked very clean with a lot of unused spades, bullets, and connectors.

Dillema:

When I removed the center console, the three connectors were already unplugged.

They were:

1) Four Pin square layout (defrost/belts?) female

2) Flat 2-pin 2wire (choke lever)

3) Flat 2-pin 3-wire (belts/defrost?)

For the life of me, I cannot find the mates for all of these in the fusebox area or anywhere behind the HVAC panel.

There are plenty of receiving connectors for the flat 2-pins (#2 and #3), but I can't make a wire-color match-up.

There is NO connector to receive the Four Pin connector (#1) from the console.

Any clues? Pics? Where to look? Wire color hints? I am studying the wiring diagram but it does not seem to show minor connectors.

The dash, console, and dash harness all seem to check out as authentic 72 units. My spare 73 dash with 73 harness has the Four Pin connector. I checked.

PS which wire(s) goes to the trans for reverse?

:stupid:

I can't tell you off the top of my head, but if you go to the XenonS30 link in my signature, you can download a copy of the FSM for the 72. Look in the BE section, and find the body harness page. It will identify the connections for you.

I am a little relieved because I don't see the FOUR PIN SQUARE connector in this diagram either.

But I am still miffed!!

Where does the FOUR PIN connector, connect to?

If it is for the seat belt light, would there be a connector down to a seat switch????

Isn't it obvious? That connector in your hand is just a figment of your imagination.

Okay, since the FSM doesn't want to cooperate, post the colors of the wires at the connectors. We may be able to deduce functionality from that. Also, how far back can you trace the wires going to the 4-wire plug? What other plugs come off of the bundle that has the 4-wire plug? That may give us some clues.

Well, from looking at BE-4, if the 4-wire plug has 2 white wires, a white wire with black stripe, and a white wire with blue stripe, I would say is would be a plug for stock radio speakers. Otherwise, I don't see anything that jumps out at me that would be plugged in at that point.

The four pin plug I am holding is attached, to the center console. It feeds one of the functions of the console (seat belt, defrost, or choke light). What I cannot find is the male pair of the plug under the dash. I will call out the wire colors in a few...

Do wire colors usually carry through the connectors?

Sometimes wire colors carry through. Sometimes they don't. That's part of the fun of working with electrical systems. :)

Now that I finally understand that the wires were attached directly to the center console, I can look on my 73, since I believe it's the same part for both years (hopefully wired the same).

I am almost positive that something is amiss. A-missing that is. I have all the wires exposed under the HVAC controls and there is no trace of a connector to match. Maybe a sub-harness or something??

Okay, it is definitely for your choke light and seat belt light. On my 73, the bundle with that 4-wire plug goes off to the right, under the heater panel. Sorry, I just didn't want to spend more time in the cold garage to try to trace it out more than that.

Here's a picture of it in my car.

Well you have already been a huge help. That is the connector I am looking for! Unfortunately it's not in any of my harnesses under my dash...so I think.

The wires on the console side of my connector are red, red-blue, black, green.

The search continues tomorrow.
