72 Center Console Connections??

NEW QUESTION:

Is there supposed to be a "sub-harness" for the seat switches and seat belt switches?

Where is it supposed to connect on the dash or body harness?

There is no mention of such a sub harness in the manuals. There is wiring shown for it in the wiring diagrams though.

It's as clear as mud in the manual. I agree with you there. If you look at the attached picture, I put a red line on what I think the most likely bundle for the missing wires/plug. I based my assumption on the fact that the plug for the lights is right by the plug for the defroster switch. I found the defroster switch plug detail on the drawing and traced it up. With any luck, that might help you in your quest.

I'll also look tonight for where the seatbelt wiring runs in my 73. It probably was removed by a previous owner.

Yes I think I figured out where the Defroster (3-wire) and the choke lever (2-wire) connectors from the console go (shown in the manual vaguely). Now the 4-wire is a different story. Since it is NOT in my car and it's NOT in any manuals (70-74), I am guessing that it might be for the seat belt circuit. Which is also not shown in any manual. The wiring IS however drawn into the large diagram. My car contains no wiring to the seat belts or seat switches, so by rule of elimination...

I am tempted to connect the battery and start tracing and testing things. But first I need to install the engine bay harness.

Dave - I have those same open connectors on my '72 and Pete Sanders is just in the process of putting his wiring all in place in his '72 and he called me about these very same plugs. Not to worry.

If you'd put in an LS1 and a Painless wiring assembly you would be you driving your Z right now....

Could it be that your '72 did not have the "Fasten seatbelts" warning light and that pannel was replaced later with a later one?, looking at the harness from my 11/72 I do not see any square 4 plug... Do you have retractible seatbelts or the non retractable ones?

Bingo. Exactly what I was thinking. When I bought the car, there was no passenger belt and there was a drivers side lap belt.

I think I can find the correct defroster wires under the dash and "make" them work. Same will have to go for the choke light, which will be choking the triple Webers. I will "make" it work. I am not the type to just shut my eyes at unknowns; which is why I am here.

I look at this research as an opportunity to get more intimate with my new car.

I used my pocket camera tonight and shot about a bazillion photos up under the dash and everything looks factory. No strange wiring gremlins under there.

some of the plugs in the console area are for corner marker lights ("rear fogs")and fog/Driving lights for the front (red+green or black wires), pre-wired for the other markets Z's were sold. How are your turn signals working?, I don't see the film canister sized factory flasher unit on your column. also do you have a key in reminder buzz, its also on the column near the flasher unit. The two sets on plugs near the coulmn may be for those... Todd

I have not yet run the car. It has no engine or engine bay harness yet. The steering column was out of the car so they may have removed the flasher. I will look for it or get a new one. Good call, I hope those are the wires for the flasher unit. The hazard switch and the brake switch and all the relays and other doo-dads are all connected with "factory" connectors. It looks like everything is already connected. Except for what I showed above...which I can't ID yet. Maybe they are just meant to dangle. Don't forget, there is no radio connected. Some of those dangles may be radio related, and ORIGINAL console related. Since I don't know what the ORIGINAL console was wired like, or what functions were in the ORIGINAL console, I can't tell. I bet the PO removed the key buzzer.
