Buying a 240z..

Depends what you want really...

And I wouldn't know what price to pay - I'm in Australia.

I suggest you keep your eye out, look at everything and try to work out how much you need to pay for what kind of car you want. I made the mistake of buying too quickly (I inspected 6 Z cars in one day and then made my decision. Next time I won't be in such a hurry to buy one.

I've got to reinforce what AlfaDog had to advise.

Buy the best dam Z you can possible afford!

Be ready, willing and able to WALK AWAY from a deal when the Z doesn't meet your criteria.

Inspect any canidate thoroughly!

If only I had taken this advice on my first Z! I thought I had a winner - I ended up parting that poor rust bucket out not even a year later! Leason learned. My latest 72 is the result of taking these rules to heart.

There has been some good advise given already but I can see that you already have your mind made up that you are going to redo a car . I would say restore but that means bring it back to origional and I dont think that you want to spend 15 to 20 grand. I am talking here form experience in that I have been there done that and have the tea shirt .Not with a Z but but with Detroit iron . Any Z that you buy ,that you can afford , other than the the guy with the 10 large, will have plenty to do and work on. Think of it this way , If you buy a car in need of paint , and just a little body work , and the interior is origional so it will be 25 to 30 yrs old. But the running gear is great trans. is good strong engine and all. First of all you are most likely looking at about $2000.00 to make it right. A good paint job I mean a good one will start at $1300.00 and thats if you dont do the under the hood and door jams. Now if you have any body damage add another $700. on top of that. Now interior we are looking at another $300.00 lets say because you can do most of that your self. We havent even started talking of rust , witch is the down fall of these cars. This can get costly ! Do you see where I am going here ? Please before you start and blow what cash you have on some Z that has been painted over rust and has problems like this . Do your home work and buy the cleanest most rust free car y ou can afford . You will be so much ahead of the game and will be driving the car insted of having it on jackstans. There are fine Zs in the western states away from the road salt that you could drive home . These little cars are built with no main frame like your truck the "frame is sheet metal" it's unibody construction so when it starts to rust in between the welded structure its trouble big time . Thats why you dont see many zcars in the states that use salt on the roads unless the owners park them in the winter. As for the weight of the cars My '73 is 2500 lbs. if I remember right and the HP depending on the year but in the area of 150 when new. Any way I am sorry for the length of the post. Well, heres an update on the 240z's from up north..

I personally didnt go, but my friend went up for the weekend, he said he drove by it a few times, and noticed they had SIX Z cars sitting out by the road for sale..

He said he saw visable rust on 2, but only on the hood, and roof.. It sounds to me like those are parts cars, because he said it had a differant colored door..

The other ones he said looked like they had new paintjobs, which were shiny and glossy looking, so that could be a good thing right?

I guess when I go up north hunting Ill have to take a look at them, and maybe get some pictures or more info from the owners...
