Posted February 16, 201015 yr comment_309763 OK, After owning 5 240Z's I should know this.....but sadly I don't. What exactly is the part pictured (circled in red) called. I couldn't find it on several parts catelogs so I thought one of you guys could help me out. Thanks, Randy PS....Generic picture from a 73, but assume it will be the same for a 70. February 16, 201015 yr comment_309764 The part in the picture is the vacumn hoses and check valve for the brake master cylinder. Don't know if they are still available from Nissan but you could try Courtesy Nissan. February 16, 201015 yr comment_309767 I believe the check valve is still available, but to the best of my knowledge, the two hoses are NLA. There are more than one style, definitely early and late, might be an intermediate choice as well.Various people have built replica hoses using cloth covered normal hose, and running copper wire inside to hold the proper bends. I'm a bit leery of that myself, the original hoses were heavily reinforced to prevent them from collapsing under high vacuum conditions, which could cause a reduction in power assist for the brakes. February 16, 201015 yr Author comment_309768 Jeff and Arne,Thanks for the clarification on the valve and hoses.I did find the check valve, and just as you said struck out on the hoses. However there is one set on EBay right now but it still has 4 or 5 days left.Since I'm not looking to do a concours restoration, is it safe and effective to use a hose from an auto parts store? If so what grade and size. Thanks guys, hopefully one day before I'm 80 I'll get this car running..... I'm a bit leery of that myself, the original hoses were heavily reinforced to prevent them from collapsing under high vacuum conditions, which could cause a reduction in power assist for the brakes.Arne, I think people are using copper tubing, not wire, inside of the 'replica' hoses, so I would image that would keep them from collapsing, but I haven't tried it myself. I suppose that could also reduce the air volume, so I am not sure if that is a problem or not. I think the set on ebay Randy is referring to is this one that Jim Frederick is selling http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280464739462&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT. He seems to be listing quite of few different replica hoses on ebay recently. They look like they are just cut down from longer stock hoses, maybe fuel hose or something else?-Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/34771-what-is-this-calledneed-to-order/#findComment-309770 Share on other sites
February 16, 201015 yr Author comment_309774 Hey Mike,Yes, that is the set I was looking at. If they are cut down would you consider using them, would the hoses be at the local dealer or would a standard fuel line work.Would like to get something to take back to the shop on Wednesday, but don't want to compromise safety. February 16, 201015 yr comment_309775 Randy,I think both Kats and Esprist have both made reproduction hoses using this method. In this thread http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34094 Kats said he used Nissan fuel hose, but not specifically which one. They seem to be running them with no problems and it seems like it would probably be ok as long you are use copper tubing inside. However, I am no expert and haven't tried it myself, so I am not making any recommendations on this yet.-MikeActually, Kats mentions in another linked thread that he used Nissan hose #17239-E4600. February 16, 201015 yr comment_309787 Black Dragon Automotive calls part of it a servo hose:http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/z/full.aspx?Page=104Its listed only for a 280Z, but the check valve that it terminates in is the same for 240Z -- 280Z. I don't know if the engine side connection point changed between the 240s and 280s. February 17, 201015 yr comment_309860 Generally, the hoses don't wear out. The vacuum check valves can get gummy. When I was looking for the parts for my Z, I found that the vacuum valves that Nissan used were the same across several models. I replaced mine with one from a Sentra. Some of the vacuum check valves have a rubber spacer donut that can be removed - then it will fit perfectly on a Z.
