Posted March 1, 201015 yr comment_311047 Ok, this has obviously been discussed more than 10K times but this is what these forums are for, right?I started my 72 first time for 5 months. It's in warmed garage so climate should be out of question. First it didnt want to give gasoline to carbs, so i open the valve cover and manually pumped fuel pump so that i could see it flowing through filter. After that it started, very roughly but after giving some pedal to the metal, it started to run with all 6 cylinders. In fall, when i make the first start, it didnt cough no matter how much you rammed it but now it seems to cough if you press too fast too hard. Front carb seems to be working alright but the rear one is squirting gas out when pressing hard. So could this be caused by float or what? March 1, 201015 yr comment_311053 Sounds like a stuck float, IF the fuel is comming out of the top of the fuel bowl through the overflow tube into the carb. This happend to me on my first startup in a while. Tapped lightly on the top of the bowl cover with a screwdriver handle to unstick it. The insides, needle, seat, float, will gum up if the fuel evaporates in the bowl over time. March 1, 201015 yr comment_311077 Same thing happens with folks lawnmowers every spring! Next time that you have a planned sleep, use some Sta-bil. Our new fuel formulas really gum up stuff. March 2, 201015 yr comment_311153 Just my 2 cents worth. Several years ago, I had the same problem with my 74 beetle. After rebuilding the carb every other year, I switched to using B.P. (Amoco) Ultimate. I haven't had to touch the carb in over 10 years. I don't like using the sta-bil, it seems to cause the bug to run rich, smokes black, until that tank is gone.
